anyone use Reloader 17 in .308 with 168gr pils?

I just bought a Savage hvy barrel .308 and was wanting to load some 168 grain bullets with reloader 17 if I can find some info...

Won't work.. but the 210's may be a different story.. I tried it with Berger 185BT's and got them going 2980fps, but the accuracy is wasn't there in my rifle. But dang..It was good enough for hunting around here..

I do not know of any data to the 168gn bullet.but on the other hand a few guys at snipershide have worked up a load for a 208gn Amax.and they say its working really good.even out of a 1:12 twist barrel.

and have you looked for data at the Alliants web site.I would think they have posted some kind of info useing R17.I f not use varget or 4064.

i would stick with the heavier bullets with that powder. 175-200 weight range. any heavier and i think the twist rate of your barrel might let you down.

There's a nice article on RL17 with heavyweight .308 bullets in the latest issue of Precision Shooting magazine. If you know somebody who subscribes, check it out.

There's not enough case capacity in the .308 for RL17 & lightweight bullets though, so plan on sticking with something over 175 grains if at all possible.

I too have read the thread over on sniper hide. There posting some interesting results with RL17. One guy claims he is pushing the berger 190s at 2710. That is impressive to me for a 190gr. pill out of a .308. I have not tried RL17 in my .308 due to weather. This guy's load was 47.5gr. He did say it was near max in his chamber. My plan is to cut that back 10% and work up slowly. I have shot the 190smks above 41.4gr. of varget and only got 2520fps. This was sierra's max load not my chambers max load. Even so the 190s shot really well until I got out past 500yrds. I assumed that the 190s were just to heavy for the .308 and that they were not stablizing at long distance because of the lack of velocity. Like I said tho this was my assumption. There are a lot of guys here that know a lot more about RL 17 than me. I did pm Laurie about RL17 in the .308 and he sent me some interesting results from Quickload. Also I have been advised that RL17 may not work as great behind the lighter bullets? I would like to try RL17 with the 175gr pills as well.

I forgot to mention that 2710fps with the 190s the guy was shooting a 26in barrel. I too have a 26in barrel on my .308 so I'm looking foward to at least experimeanting with the 190s again. If anything else it's time behind the trigger, and more knowledge gained for me. A Win win situation

Here is the data that I got from Laurie from Quickload.

Thanks for all the info guys... Man it would be nice to shoot thwe 190's at 2700. Then I could shoot the 190's in the WSM and the .308

Maybe I will try the 178gr AMAX and the 190gr Berger or SMK with the RL-17

Wouldnt it be nice to use the same powder and the same bullet in both rifles....

I'm not sure if your already sold on RE17,or still need to buy?? If your looking to buy, RE15 might be a better choice for the 168 grain pills. It's a favorite of mine for the 168's in both .308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield.
