anyone tryed a 25-06 at 1000yds??

a friend is keen to try his sako 25-06 out to 1000yds. it has a 1-12 twist so it wont stabalise the 115 berger VLD's but it think the 100gr SMK might be the best of what i came across?? i think we should be able to get above 3200fps and have similar ballistics to a .308 with 155gr bullets.

has anyone tryed it with this bullet or any other for that matter? any loads/ seating depths that seemed to make it work well?

The comparison really depends on how hard you can push the 308s.

I plugged the .257 SMK into JBM using 3200FPS and Litz BC and it looks like it shoots about a 29MOA drop to 1000, which is better than the heavier slower 308s but you are getting about the same drift (my calc says 9.6" per MPH of cross wind) as a 175 SMK at 2650FPS. ( I've just switched from 175SMKs to 185 Berger BT target bullets and JBM seemps to be pretty spot on.)

Compared to the 155 palma bullet (2156) pushed at 2950 JBM says it takes 28MOA of elevation from a 100 yd zero and 8" of drift per MPH of wind.

Yea, if you can drive the 100s at 3200, then ballistics look a lot like the 155

I have not made it to 1,000 yet but 750 regularly with a 100 grn Nosler BT traveling just under 3,400 fps. I have tried other loads but the the BT is the go to for accuracy. Results have been MOA but wind is tricky compared to the big stuff. Love the caliber my favorite.

I have shot mine in practice only at 1000 yards and it did okay. The biggest problem is the bullet choice is quite limited. My gun did not like the 100 gr Sierra's at all.
I ended up using the Sierra 117 gr spitzer boattail and RE22 powder. The 117 had the best bc of any 25 caliber bullet at that time and the harder you pushed them the better they shot.
I used that combo to take a very nice 3x3 buck at 800 yards about 4-5 years ago.

What Lynn said. The 117s are the best bullet for long range. I used to shoot the 25-06 a lot and loved it but the bullet choice sucks!!

I shot mine to 1000yds playing with it. Groups weren't bad but nothing to write home about. Mine had a Lilja barrel on it.

the reason for choosing the 100gr option was that the factory twist wont stabalise the 117gr berger and i wasnt shure if the 117gr sierra would be in the same boat.

what acctual load combo where you guys running and fps? its not going to be a serious rig think he just wants to give it a go punch some paper ;D

The factory (10") twist will handle the 117 bt Sierra, 115 Berger vld, 115 Nosler. I shoot the 108 JLK vld @ 1000 yards very good and it has a higher bc than all the fore -mentioned (.500). It is a well made match grade bullet. It stabilizes well in the 10" twist, muzzle velocity in a 27" barrel is 3200 fps and it only drops 230" @ 1000 yards from a 100 yard zero.

Been molying 115 Nosler BT's for years in my 26" Remington-based 25-06. Killed lots of groundhogs and deer but now mostly it's a 600 yard gong or 1,000 yd. gong gun.

Use 55gr. Reloader 22, CCi mag primers and the moly-115's throated and seated way out (above neck/shoulder junction). I get 3140fps.

Gun can shoot 1/2" @100...4"@600 and???@1,000 yards. It hits gongs and I sometimes loan it to friends who want to "try that".

Trajectory is very close to my 6mm Dasher ( 107's @ 3,000) at 1,000 yards.

I never have understood why companies like JLK, Berger, and Sierra don't make longer heavier higher BC bullets in the .257 caliber. Certainly the 25-06 and 257 Weatherby can push a 130 gr bullet at 2900 to 3000. I still think that the 25-06 could be a decent contender with a bit higher bc bullet.

Because not many barrel makers make fast twist .25 caliber barrels. 1:9 is the fastest that I have seen.

XTR, when I plug the 100g SMK in at 3200 fps at sea level, 59 deg F, I get a 31.9 MOA and subsonic past 900 yards. The JBM page wont post as a pic or a link from my Safari Browser, but if the sound barrier is a bid deal, then my try at JBM shows fail. At higher elevation and more realisitc temps, say 90 F, it would just make supersonic at 1,000 yards.

I shot a 25-06 Sendro in factory class in 1000 yds benchrest. I shot the 100 gr MK at 3200 or so. It ran 7" to 8" groups. It liked 115 BT Nosler also.

i actually have some 115 nozler BT's on hand as i use them in my .257wby mag so they might be worth a go!

why dont they make barrels and bullets?? because everything you can do with a .25-06 you could do with a 6.5x284. 6.5 and .25 are so close that your filling the same market for limited returns.

I am shooting a savage 112BVSS in 25-06 competing in 1000yd Benchrest Silhouette. It was my do all rifle and has worked quite nicely for me this year at Ridgway. I use 115gr Bergers with 48.5grn imr4350 for 3125fps. It knocks the 1000yd coyotes down with authority when I do my part right.

took my boss out shooting with his 25-06 this last summer. He did pretty well out to 1050 on steel. I couldn't tell you what he was running velocity wise but it was just a 100g ballistic tip. It took a lot of elevation but it made it out there. He's now thinking of making a dedicated long range rifle.

anyone tried a 25-06 at 1000yds??

To answer the initial question, I tried a 6.5-06 at 1000yds and beyond. Many times. 100 years ago, we already had it all figured out. As previously stated, .25 and .26 are so close, I'd rather use the one that allows heavy match bullets.

Pac Nor will make you an 8 twist barrel. I have one and am shooting resized 140 grain A-max's thru it very effectively.

an my 2506 , an I would pick up my bullets off the ground 2 to 3 feet from the target,,

You gotta put away those roundnose bullets..... ;)

I shot a Sendero in 25-06 for a couple of years in the 1K BR stock class.

115 Bergers, H-4831-SC, in Lapua brass, running around 3200.

Held the record at 4.XX" for a while.
