Anyone run heavy bullets in a Tikka 300WSM?

30 hours of travel in planes will get your mind wondering.... Just back for 2 weeks in South Africa, 6th trip but first time using outfitters rifles. We used a suppressed Tikka T3 of some variant in 300WSM for some of the plains game and when the worn out barrel hit game (tales for another post), I was impressed. I liked the removable mag feature, simple and easy for my wife. Outfitter used Norma ammo with 180 grain bullets. This got me thinking as I have had several 300 RUM and currently have a 300 NMI. Could a person take a Tikka 300WSM and use 300 Win Mag magazines, extend the bolt stop, and possible lengthen the throat if necessary to shoot the Berger 215's? I am looking for an inexpensive thumper for my wife. All shooting would be suppressed.

Not 215 but I did put together a Tikka 300WSM for an outfitter friend with210's. Had the tapered part of the action faced off to except a Rem style recoil lug bedded in a ADG stock and used mountain tactical mag for 300WSM and extended bolt stop, shot really well with RL23.
I dont think a 300WM mag would work because of the short fat WSM case could be wrong though.
A call to mountain tactical could tell you I know I just called them and told them what case and bullet I was running.
Could be just a simple feed lip adjustment since there center feed.

I dont think it would be any different than putting together any other rifle. You are probably gonna run into length problems with a Tikka and heavies throated properly for a 300WM because the action is only 3.4 basically there a mid length action. A 300WM is better suited for a true LA

My wife and I had a great trip. We had (2) trips and some business meetings between the trips. She manages the Chicago branch of Coppersmith Logistics/Hunting-Trophy.com so we visited with some shippers and Splitting Image Taxidermy in Port Elizabeth. She shot a bunch of stuff for this being her second trip to SA.
Roan, Red Lechwe, Springbok, 45" Cape Buffalo, Waterbuck, Golden, Black and Blue Wildebeests, Hartman's Zebra. And she let me shoot a 45 1/2" Cape Buffalo too for my birthday. Have a great trip!

I did it with a M700but have no experince with the Tikka.
I long throated a 300wsm and loaded 180 nosler part so the base was even with the neck base. Magazine was long enough since it was a LA receiver. Feeding the short cartridge was a problem and might have been better if a SA with an extended magazine would have been used. It took more powder but there was not much velocity gain over the wsm in a standard action (both with 24' barrels). I abandoned the project and used the standard wsm rifle and loads, both factory and handloads.
If you want a 300wm start with it. More? Use a 300 norma wheeler improved.

Yes you can, but I'm pretty sure a 300 win mag magazine won't work. The bolt stop is an easy fix. Either buy a long action bolt stop or file back the one you have until it becomes a long action Bolt stop. You can get an extended magazine that will work for a 300wsm from either mountain tactical or hells canyon. I'm not really sure what the throat on the tikka 300wsm is, so I don't know if you would need to throw it out to seat a 215 out as far as you'd want to.

It has been some years since my last trip to Africa but 300WM ammo was much more available than the short mag. I knew several PHs who used them.

I dont know what max mag length is on a tikka but i know my savage 11 was 2.97” or so. I could seat berger 180 elites and 210 vlds to that length and got awesome groups. I now single feed them seated longer and was able to work up to a faster node. With mag limit i probably would stay in that 180-210 range

Yes. At least 3.5! I think it's supposed to be somewhere around 3.55. I really want one, but the price of that and the mag is $300+ and I don't like the idea of a protruding magazine. This would be perfect for a Tikka 30-06 or 300wm though

This entire endeavor was to build an inexpensive 30 caliber thumper, suppressed, for the wife. I was hoping a bolt stop and magazine change would be the extent of the changes needed. She doesn't shoot much other than practicing for trips. I liked the flush mag on the Tikka. I'll probably just buy one and play with load development for some Bergers.

That is all thats needed, I did just that for a 300wsm on a tikka, I would suggest calling mountain tactical its exactly what I did and it worked out great.
If the 215 doesn't work I know the 210 will thats what my guide friend wanted to shoot

If you go factory barrel im not sure what twists they offer if an 11 is the only option then I would run the 185 juggs. A 10 will be fine with 210 or 215
