May be a 1943 Spanish. I have had good luck with 150 Sierras with IMR4895, 160 Barnes and 170 Hornady SST's with CFE223 in a German M98.

I have an old Nazi war bring back with the duffel bag cut. I bought a box of shells and took it to the range. I shot three rounds and put it away. That steel butt plate hurts!

What would you do with a 30-06.? It has steel butt plate. If you had a sling and learned how to shoot it, it wouldn't be a problem. If you are shooting, bench, prone , or what ever, keep it snug in your shoulder and relax...go with the recoil.
I taught my grandkids how to shoot my 03/A3 and they are really good at it. They can break trap discs @ 100 yds from a rest. Honest.
I guess depends on how bad you want to shoot it.
If you choose to enjoy it for what it is go for it!

Thanks for that gem, Mort. When I was younger, I enjoyed shooting all the big kickers and know how to use a sling. The first rifle I ever bought was a 300 Weatherby and I loved shooting that gun. Now I’m older and prefer shooting the smaller cartridges.

Wolfdog91, looks like matching numbers. Do the numbers on the bolt match also? They are great rifles, and the 8x57 is a stout cartridge for hunting at moderate ranges. Do you hunt? They have a lot of whollop for close range on white tails. It’s one of my brothers top choices.

joshb, May be the stock shape. I’m sure you know that. Perhaps not enough drop? I’m not as fond of recoil as I once was either.

The bolt handle has been re-forged so numbers may be gone Look for number on bolt shroud and maybe bolt release and of course the action. May be a complete match and an excellent find for 250.00.

It’s the fact that I’m 66 and my broad shoulders have migrated to my waist!

Most people around here have a Mauser in the family as a part of inheritance. These are usually models from the WWI. Every such Mauser has a story about great-grandfather fighting Russians in eastern Galizien attached to it. So, Mauser is not just a rifle that we own, it's a part of family history. I shoot mine usually once a year in November, then clean it, spray it with ballistol and put it back in the closet.

I am doing a Mauser project right now. It’s based on a really nice 1908 vintage 98 action that I bought off of Accurate Shooters Classifieds.

I am doing a pretty detailed write up on every thing. Here is the link.

Thats a Spanish Model 1943 short rifle manufactured at the La Coruna armory. They were manufactured between 1943 and 1957. They are modelled on the German K98 Mauser. Unless scrubbed when sporterized, the receiver ring should have the Spanish coat of arms with the date of manufacture beneath it. My uncle used to hunt boars in the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain with one just like it. Kicked like an angry mule! I'd get a nice recoil pad for it before you shoot it.

Two brief suggestions:

Remove the scope ring base to see if the information is still intact.

Remove the barreled action from the stock to look at the underside of the action. Many countries used this area for proof marks and inspector/acceptance stamps. Sometimes even the side of the rear tang was stamped with some form of identity.

Enjoy!

:)
