Anyone not like their 260?

Title says it all. I'm about ready to go ahead but a guy who I respect says go with a 6.5-284. I think that's a bit more gun then I need. I shoot informal target and varmint hunting mostly. Nothing close to 1K. I did look at a 243 1-9 twist but since I have a 243 and a 6mm BR I thought I'd try the 6.5's.

What do you think. Those of you that have a 260 happy? Yes, I did read the other 260 thread.

A .260 will do most of what a 6.5- 284 will do. The velocity difference is not that great and barrel life issues at the higher speeds in the 6.5-284 seem to out way it. I have been using my .260 for a couple of years and am completely statisfied. Also you maybe surprised how well it will do out to 1000 yds.

Did your buddy tell you a 6.5-284 goes thru barrels mucho quicker?? You can get more velocity...and thats it. Not a bit more accurate

I agree with the above posts. Had a 6.5/284 and liked it but it cooked off at around 950 rounds (probably a bit sooner but I assumed the lost points were me). I am about to rebarrel to a .260/8" twist/30" length for Long Range sling.

I have a Browning Low Wall in 260 and its the sweetest little gun, lovelly octagonal barrel.

Lapua have made 260 brass with a small primer hole, they think it gives an edge, like on their 6.5-47.

where have you seen this? i have been shooting my custom 260 since before lapua even offered 260 brass at all, but have never seen small primer 260 brass.

I hate my .260 semi custom savage. Al it does is shoot tight groups,it is so boring.I dont know what to do with it.LOL

ive got a 6.5-284 and i wouldnt trade it for a .260, yeah ok higher velocities tend to wear a barrel out quicker but hey a V8 is always more fun than a 6 who cares how much gas it chews? i think if you picked the 260 over the 6.5-284 eventually you would regret it....the 6.5 reaches out further and does it better....and you can still shoot stuff thats closer and know you've got the legs to reach out and touch something way out there with more panache and confidence :)
i know there will be many who disagree with me thats cool its the best thing bout being able to have an opinion and mine is the 6.5-284 beats the .260 every time!

I like to spend my time shooting and not changing out barrels. ;D

You have to buy "Lapua 308 PALMA" brass which comes with a small primer hole and then neck it down to 260.

Gee,

Since I recently built my first bench rifle in this caliber, I read everything that I can find regarding the .260 Remington. This is one of the very few times I've seen someone make mention of necking down the Palma brass for the .260 and I'm very curious about the success of this.

Thanks,
Jerry

I have shot out several 6.5-284 barrels, it is a great 1000yd. cartage. I also have 260's, but if you are shooting 800yds. or less? The 260 is just as good, cheaper, less barrel ware.

Hi Jerry,

Regret I have no actual experience of necking down Lapua 308 PALMA brass to achieve a small primer hole for 260 Rem., but felt it worth mentioning as I think certainly be something worth trying. i think 6.5x47 has the edge on accuracy, unless the small extra velocity from 260 is really important for use at longer ranges. I have been quite keen on the reported ease of shooting 30BR out to 300m with hardly any load development needs using 1-17 twist and the light heads around 115gr. Currently i have an 30 cal blank, been sitting with me unused for 10 years, by magnum research carbon fibre wrap in 1-10 twist and may go for 30-284. I think using a quality high power scope brings a lot of satisfaction issues, for when squeezing off a shot only to see the bullet go somewhere the cross hairs are not, is quite disatisfying. Recently I took the scope off a 308, and used just open sights and cast 150gr heads with gas checks, and it was great fun plinking a 2" explosive targets at 50 yards, the type meant for sticking under clay pigeons; Browning BLR with high capacity FAL magazine. I took one 2" explosive target out at 275 yards on my second attempt with .22-250, in low light, and the cross hairs of the 6x42 Schmidt and bender scope totally hid the target, but there was no wind. So, thought it would be nice to see the target better, fitted a 15 power night force scope, and after 8 or 9 shots i still had not hit it. The problem was wind, 20mph and the 55gr heads were being blown all over at 275 yards, despite a muzzle velocity of 3650fps. It's all fun fun fun !

This is such a fun hobby and just like I have heard it said many times "its about the journey" I recently walked into the best gunsmith I know of around here with the intentions of having my Krieger HV blank chambered in another 260 as I love the one I have now, just wanted a different (heavy ) contour to play with. Anyways by the time I walked out it turned into a 6.5x47 and I know I wont regret it. I know this didnt help and it seems most of these 6.5 questions end up in the same place. But any of the above you wont regret ;D

I bought my first 260 Rem in 1999. I am now on my third one.
