Anyone make their own stock?

Monte,
Steve does know his style of stock. Looking at several of his, I would say it is overkill. If it is not a laminated stock, It could be weak in the grip area and need a rod.His competition stocks are much different in the grip area than BR stock and by design would be weaker there. Not saying they are not top quality, just different.

Nathan,

Regardless of how 'thick' the stock is through there, you might want to put a rod through it anyway. The last McGee stock I had was pretty thick but it still had a rod through it, and Steve knows a thing or two about stocks.

Good luck,

Monte

Thanks for the advice. Is his stocks 7 or 8 lam's thick or a solid blank?

I would think this would make a difference. But, as you say, it might be safe to do it anyway unless drilling the hole and degrading the integrety of the 7 ply lam would hurt more than help in a lam situation.

The stock I had was solid walnut, with a lot of curly grain. I'd think a glued-up laminate blank would be somewhat more stiff, depending on grain and all that. Still, it's relatively cheap insurance against what would surely be a heart-breaker. If you can angle it right, you may be able to 'hide' the rod under the rear tang of the action.

HTH,

Monte

My rear grip XP-100 stocks are a bit thin in the grip area and it has never been a problem with the laminates. I see no reason that a threaded rod inserted into that area would be a problem, I have thought of it but never felt the need to do it seeing no one has ever broke one ......

Heres what I got done so far.

Hey that looks good! You planned out your sawing and drilling right when you profiled it! I like how you transitioned from the underside of the grip to the underside of the butt. It looks like it will be very stable in the bags as well.

Should look great when finished. The laminate is a nice touch.

Put the last coat of clear coat on today. Tomorrow I'm going to put the gun together and it will be finished.Finally. I'll post some pictures tomorrow and then I'm off to Oak Ridge to do some serious load testing!

Building a vacuum press is easy enough. Lots of info out there on them. http://www.veneersupplies.com/categories/Vacuum__Press__Items/
I use one for curved custom mill work. Use the ready made bags and you can laminate you own stocks, if you have a thickness planer and sander, using powdered resin glue I mix up for each batch.

That stock is just fun to look at. I don't know what it is for sure but most hand made stocks just look great. Maybe it's understanding what kind of time it takes.

Let us know how she handles.

Great work, Jim

Thanks.

Handles like a dream come true. Took 5th at the Tn. state F-class, one more point I'd had 3rd.

We'll see how she does at Oak Ridge this weekend for the regionals. If it don't rain us out.
