Anyone know there stuff on mauser actions?

I pick up a mauser action a while back. My guess is its a commerical action as there is no thumb cutout and nothing for a charger clip. The only markings are the serial number and on the tang is stamped Spain. Can someone tell me anything about it. It was in 7mm mag. caliber.

Hi Shuter

I hope someone here can help, but in case they don't,I suggest you post your questions with all the details you have on this action at Mauser central;their site is almost exclusively dedicated to Mausers of any kind and era.Good luck with it anyway.

My guess it is a Santa Barbera action. It does look like 98 doesn't it? They are or were imported to this country. Not as in demand as the FN's from Belgium and can make nice rifles.

Yep looks just like a 98, except for no thumb cutout or slot for stripper clips.

I built a rifle on a Santa Barbara action years ago. It was a few bucks cheaper than the Mark X, and being a poor soldier, every dollar was important. It turned out to be false savings - penny wise and pound foolish, as it were. I had to replace the entire trigger guard/magazine box assembly because the unit that was furnished with the action was rougher than a cob. I never could get the hinged floorplate to work. I also replaced the Rube Goldberg trigger that came with it with a Timney Featherweight. It turned out to be a pretty decent rifle, all things considered. I might buy a rifle built on one as long as it was well done, but I'd never buy another action.

My vote also goes to Santa Barbara, I have one that sounds like a twin to the one you have. Parket Hale used Santa Barbaras o some of their rifles, that is where mine came from.
