Are the speedtech windmeters any good? It seems like like Kestrel has a good name but they have some quirks. Thanks Jason

I my opinion wind meters don't give you the information you really need. Buy yourself a good set of wind flags here: http://www.brflags.com/ and you'll be way ahead of the game. You need to see what's happening down range. The flag will give you the direction, the tail the intensity. Learn to use both elements.

Want wind speed? Check out the Weather Channel for your Zip Code: http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/tenday/USVA0148?dp=windsdp

Hi Jason,

I have a Speedtech sm-28 skymaster and I am happy with it. It also measures temp, humidity, barometric pressure and altitude. It has calibration function for resetting altitude when traveling. Had to rest from 600 feet from home to 7000 feet in Wyoming to get the correct pressure reading for weather trends. I would buy another if something happend to the one I have.

PS hard to use flags in hunting situations

I don't have the opportunity to shoot competitively, so yes I would use it for hunting. I do always check weather.com and plan around it, but it is not always accurate. I odered one of the speedtech meters from cabelas, I had some of their money to spend, and it was ok I guess but the biggest thing I didn't like was it had no backlight and was kind of hard to see when the sun started to go down. I thought that the elevation deal would be nice but it was inaccurate at best as far as I could tell, I couldn't get close to the same reading twice in the same place and I really didn't need that function anyway. For half the price I can get one that reads wind speed and temperature and have a light in it.

Gary, It can't be that hard. Long ago, I read about a guy, who had a chair perched way up on the side of a tree, it over looked a fairly open field, and had one of those deer feeding machines at one end. He tied cloth that blended in, on a couple of the surrounding trees and brushes. It was a crude setup, but he called the material his wind flags. Not sure I'd call that hunting, but some would.
