I have a buddy who is going out west for elk this fall. He wants to build himself a new rifle, and the ballistics on the 6.8 Westerner that is the newest whizz bang rifle with heavy bullets out there. He was wondering if any of you guys had load data for the 6.8 or should he just go with a .270WSM since they are basically the same thing, and if you have load data for 160-170gr or thereabout loads. Thanks

If I were going to shoot the long heavies and I was building this on a mid length action where OAL isn't any concern, no question about it, I'd go with the larger case capacity of the 270 WSM and have it throated accordingly, BUT, if this was going in a true short action where I'd be limited on OAL with those same heavies I would probably give the new 6.8 Western a real hard look.

The ole' .270 WSM with, 140 gr AccuBonds or, Berger Classic Hunter, Bullets at, 3,150 to 3,200 FPS, do a pretty good "Job" on Elk,.. I have "some" personal knowledge on, this subject.
A Factory, Tikka T-3 Rifle with, MINOR work ( adjust Trigger, good recoil Pad & careful Barrel "break in" ), shoots, either of, those two .270 WSM bullets, pretty, "well" !
Tell your Buddy to, SAVE some Money on the "Custom idea", cause, to 6-700 Yards ( or more ) it'll do, fine !
So, put that extra money into, a "good" Scope and, a Tag !
Yup, the 1-8 Twist, 26" bbl. with, the 170's will get him some more, Range but, at the expense of, LESS Barrel Life and MORE, recoil ! Remember that, you HAVE to "work up" loads and Practice,.. some !
I'm NOT a Brake fan, on Big Game, Hunting Rifles ( personal Opinion ) cause IF you EVER forget to, put Muff / Plugs on, you'll suffer a Lifetime of, Tinnitus ! PS; a Chit ton of, Elk are shot at, 300 Yards or, less !
Build, a 7.5 pound Rifle and get ready to, do some serious, "Huntin' " cause, you'll need to be, "in shape" for, Elk.
It's the Indian NOT, the Arrow that, gets most of, the Elk.

He shoots PRC , and is a young fella in great shape. He has some good glass, and a action and stock, load components and a7.5# rifle is what we are shooting for. It will be used only to hunt with, so when we get load workup done, barrel life aint a biggie. I told him a good 140-150 gr bullet will do the trick with todays bullets, and we have also talked about more elk being shot 300yds and under, than long range. He wants a gun that can perform if need be. He is going on his first elk hunt and works hard for his $, so wants to cover all the bases.

Hey, I understand ! When I was younger, I thought that, the .338 Win Mag was the ONLY,.. Elk Rifle on, the Planet !
If, your buddy decides to, build / buy, a .270 WSM you're gonna need to find some,. RL-26, IMR 7828, Retumbo or H-1000 and some Fed or, CCI,. Magnum Primers to, Lite it off !
The 6.8 is pretty New but, there's quite a bit of Load Data for .270 WSM with, 130 to 150 grain Bullets.
My Load for, the WSM / 140 AccuBond is, 64.7 grains of IMR 7828 SSC, Fed 215 Primer @ 3,140 - 3,150 FPS act Chrono'd, Sub 3/4 MOA. My son and I drew 2 Elk Tags 2 years ago,. I got mine at 50 Yards he got his at 247 yards. We practiced for Weeks to, 700 Yards, Prone / 400 yds sitting with, Sticks, on 10" Plates,. LOL !

Berger might have, Load Data for, the .270 WSM, 1-8 Twist, 170 EOL Bullet.
Yup,. If I was younger and could stand the recoil, I'd probably build one, too !

In an action setup where you could throat a 170 Berger out to around 3.050 OAL and you did Defensive Edge +P to the throat you could probably send those 170's from a 270WSM out of a 26 inch barrel 3100+ with N570, N565, RL26, 7828ssc and maybe even RL25.

For anyone that is a 270 fan that's some pretty serious medicine from a 270 and with a hellacious .662 BC to boot.

The browning hells canyon speed is a lot of gun for the money and is chambered in 6.8 western

Winchester, MISSED IT,. AGAIN !
The 6.8 Westerner, SHOULD have been, Developed FOR, biggish, 7 MM dia. Bullets ( to REPLACE, the 7 WSM ! )
The .270 WSM,. "gets IT, done" as,.. IS !
All the WSM needs, are FASTER Twist Barrels, on a "modified" Long, Tikka Action to "shoot" the 165's / 170's !

I am sure you are looking to do the same thing i am thinking, look at powders use dand see what you guys can find, rather than build a rifle you cant feed. The closest i could come up with is 270 wsm data on noslers site for a 160 gr partition.
Are dies available yet for the 6.8 western?
