Anyone ever shoot 80gr bullets in a .243 Ack?

I'm getting my .243 Ack. rifle next month, and want to use it as my primary 600 yd rifle.I've got some of the new Sierra 115's,and have also just ordered some Fowler 80 grainers.Does anyone have any powder suggestions for the 80's?BTW,the rifle has a 1-8" twist. Thanks

42.5 N550 with 80gn'ers in a STRAIGHT 243, so start there.

varget, and h4350 would be good to start with, but 550 will probably get you the best velocites.

I use 80 gr. Berger Varmint Match with 47.3 gr. of H4350, Fed. Lg. Rifle Match primers that shoots at 3550 ft/s. Tightest group was 5-shot group at 200 meters measuring .357. This is out of a 1:10 Douglas in a Savage varmint countour barrel. [Corrected by Moderator]

I have shot a lot of the old Cook bullets, as well as the Berger 80 gr. bullets. My gun has always worked the best with the use of Hodgdon H-414. You have to watch the ambient temps., but it has been the best powder in my barrel. If memory serves, my charges finally worked out to the low 40 grain charge weights with this bullet weight.

I've just started working up loads for heavier bullets in my .243 A.I. 1:10 with H4831 SC and the results look promising. I'm concentrating on fine tuning a load consisting of 44.1 grn. of H4831 SC with a 87 grn. Hornady V-Max @200 meters. Interestingly enough, I used Quik-Load to identify an optimal load using my rifle parameters. The optimal computer generated load was 43.8 grn which was only .3 grn. less than what actually was my optimal load at the bench. Computer programs are guides that can get you close but do not take the place of real world testing. By the way, my next barrel will be a 1:8.

I am using 45.5gns of H4350 / AR2209 with the 80gn Berger Match . Velocity is a little over 3400 and is about maximum in my rifle . Accuracy - 5 in the 3's off a bipod .
