Anyone considered a 270. SAUM

I have a 270 WSM Winchester Short Action that is left handed. I had it re-barreled over the winter have not started testing loads, waiting for the weather to get a little better (northern UT). I use it as a hunting rifle out to 500 yards on elk in Utah. My backup or sometimes primary elk rifle is a left handed Browing A bolt chambered in 338 Win Magnum. My caution is that I go for accurate loads, and they are not always at the stated muzzle velocity.

@corsair4360 ,.. I like my .270 WSM for big Game and like you, I found my accuracy loads, to be slightly under, the Max. charge at
3,150 FPS for, a 140 grain, tho 3,250 is doable, with some Powders. What Twist, did you use for your new barrel ?
What Bullet, do you plan to use ? Lefty

I have used the Nosler 150 grain long range accubond and the new barrel is a 1:8 twist. Will start working up loads with the new barrel as soon as the range temperature (high for the day) gets above 45 degrees F here. High today is supposed to be 34 (so the weather guessers say). I plan to use the same bullet (the 150 grain).

I know this is an old-ish thread but has anyone built a 270 SAUM on a SA 700 and if so, did it feed very well?

If I have one built it would be for my dad and he'd only want to shoot 130-140gr bullets so OAL shouldn't be much of an issue. I'd probably put a HS Prec DM system in it and those are center feed so that should actually help them feed better.

I like the idea of a 270 RSAUM because it'll not only fit better in a SA 700 but I can neck down ADG 7mm RSAUM brass. Also, I already have a blueprinted SA 700 action that's had the bolt fluted and is sitting on the shelf waiting to be used, as well as, a HS Prec and MCM stock that are just collecting dust.

I don't think Remington ever came out with a 270 SAUM. Is a 270 SAUM a wildcat? There is a 270 WSM.

I don't know of anyone making a 270 WSM AR, although I guess people have made 300 and 325 WSM ARs so I suppose it is possible.

Yes, a 270 SAUM would be a wildcat cartridge but an easy one because all you'd need to do is neck down 7mm SAUM brass and with ADG making good quality brass it makes the decision a little easier, especially since I probably won't go any longer than a 24in tube.

I'm currently working on a 270 based on the 284 Shehane. I've got some specs lined up and theoretical velocities from quick load. Will likely be getting a reamer this winter once I get all my stuff in line to mock up a case and figure out my freebore.

Case capacity is roughly 62.5gr H2O and RL26 should get the 170EOL to 3000.

If you really want a SAUM the 7mm would probably be the better choice. The lack of high BC bullets for the 270 kinda kills it. There are getting to be more options now but the 7mm offerings are way more prevalent. My buddy built one for the 170 Bergers and didn’t get near the velocity he wanted out of it. Tore it apart and now the barrel is on my dads rifle chambered in 270 wsm. If you get serious about it I think he still has the reamer and dies. Edited to add: the 6.5 Saum is another one to look at. I think either the 7 or 6.5 are better options unless you’re really into .277 bullets.

I'm sorta off the idea of anything short action in 270 and I'm now favoring the idea of a 270 Blaser AKA necked down 7mm Blaser. I already have a 7mm Blaser and a bunch of extra brass for it so that will likely be the direction I go, if I end up going through with a 270 build.

The Blaser case has a tiny bit more case capacity than does a 7mm Rem mag. The case is a bit shorter and fatter as well as it is not a belted case. My 7mm Blaser shooting 180 Bergers w/RL26 from a 26in tube goes 3088-3100. If I go 270 Blaser I want to use a 24in tube and the 170's so I'm guesstimating they'll run along around 3100-ish.
