Anyone cancelled an order with SSS?

Wow! I have dealt with SSS for over 5 yrs. Ordered parts, had parts machined, had three actions timed & trued. Some times it took a day or two to get through on the phone but Lisa was always pleasant and honest with me.

Every single time, the work was completed within a week of when they said.

Before reading this post, I would (and have) highly recommended Fred Moreo for Savage work. Now, I'm having second thoughts.

Again, wow!

I'll "chalk one up" here...

I dealt with them back in Spring of 2009, and it was a pleasure dealing with them. The complaints are only recent (over the last 2 years or so.)

The following was all done through email... every attempt I made to call them was a failure

I recently contacted them in regards to giving them my Evolution trigger (bought and installed by Fred in the transaction noted from 2009), in exchange for 2 of their regular competition triggers. Lisa responded, and they agreed to the trade.. I thought that was awesome! However, after their initial response, I couldn't get any other response form them. I called every night for a week (multiple times per night), and got a busy signal every time. This was months ago, and I have yet to get a response through email.

I know what some of you are thinking... "Is the evolution trigger for sale?" ...... Yes it is.

I think SSS has a great shop, and they are great people, but their business practices are horrendous! They need to learn to NOT accept new work if they can't keep up with it. They need to come up a solution to the horrible communications failure within that shop. We call, but get the busy signal. We email, we get no response. We bitch on the forums, and see no resolve. It's craziness!

I agree with Kelbro... Lisa is very nice, and works very hard to provide excellent customer service. However, they need to wake up and realize what they're doing to themselves. They're losing a lot of business, including mine.

xr650r, didn't they still have to fix or replace the stock that they would be getting reimbursed for because the shipper broke it. i realize it is not your fault, but isn't the broken stock the shippers fault possibly.
i feel for you, it taking that long and all. no good excuses for your delay and poor cs on top of it. BUT it sure seems like you are kicking a dead horse an awful lot, any post on here on a savage and you go on and kick. it is okay with me, but i think it's getting old.so go ahead and kick some more if it makes you feel better. cliffe

I wasn't there when the damage to the stock occurred so I can't be positive one way or the other. The stock was replaced with another stock that has a perfect finish on it. I do have to skim bed it as the action doesn't fit quite right in this stock. I paid $90 for bedding and the original was bedded for this action. The bedding is close but that only counts with hand grenades. They will get re-imbursed the full amount for the stock......that could be more than they charged me. Who knows what UPS was told. I was also out the $56 for shipping but I guess I got $49 extra, so I was only out $7 plus $90 for the bedding

How did you know I hated horses??? I share my experiences so that others will not have to experience the same. If I would have read the negatives before being a customer, then I would not be a horse kicker. My rowels are razor sharp. There is a lot of things I read that I don't care for, that gets old. I realize this is an open forum and other people might have different ideas and I can respect that. I also realize that some people might appreciate the information before parting with their hard earned money.

From what I have read over a period of a year or so on this topic I wouldnt NEVER expect a turn around from them in less than a year. There is only a handfull of good smiths that have a fast turn-around time. Alot of them wont even take on new customers, so I am appreciative of reputable gunsmiths even answering the phone. I dont mean to be a smart ass this time, thats just the way it is! Good deeds and good intentions are far separated!

I will further say Fred and Lisa are at the mercy of their vendors on many things. They have to deal with the public which as a small business is real challenge.

There are many excellent gunsmiths who know and successfully work on Savage rifles.

Nat,

Regardless of the business atmosphere that SSS operates in and their day to day challenges, I believe they could have developed, and it's still not too late, a much better public relations policy by being very candid when it comes to delivery times.

All I ever asked for was an honest, [not a contrived assessment,] of when I could expect to see my work completed. If it was really going to take six months, instead of the three offered, then say six months. At least then, I could have made an informed decision to go elsewhere, or if I had six months to wait, I would know that at the end of six months I could truly know that my rifle was going to show up.

I believe that is all anyone that's posted negatively, ever wanted.

If you would be so kind, could you compile and post a list of the many excellent Savage gunsmiths you spoke of? Thanks in advance.

Outdoorsman,
Nat himself has got to be a very fine smith! I have never spoke to Nat, had any dealings with Nat, Nor ever meet him! I have meet one of his customers tho! Great guy, and one of the best FTR shooters in the country if not the world right now! So If Nat is building his rifles? I would have to say he knows a thing or two, and you should look into maybe doing business with him!

Another great smith for Savage actions I can say is Ray Bowman!! I have had work done by Ray and he is awesome to deal with! I would take a chance with SSS if I could believe that SSS was truthful! (as far as Savage actions) However why mess with them when you can deal with someone like Ray Bowman of http://www.precisionriflesales.com/ The thing about Ray is When you walk into his shop, there is always work being done! He has a broad that he keeps up with where he is at with every customer. You may not be guaranteed a fast turn around, but you can take it to the bank if you are told 3mo, 6mo, 10mo? What ever the turn around time maybe it will be what you are told, it will be what you ordered, and what Ray said it will be! Bottom line you will get what you want no more....no less! I highly recommend him if you have any rifle you want worked on!
Thanks
Mark

I have been asked to recomend a list of good gunsmiths to work on Savages. The gunsmithing world is small and most know or have heard one another. One should find a smith that knows the action inside and out.
There are several levels of gunsmiths who work on Savages.
There are those who just change out parts and barrels.
There are those who disasemble the action and use bushings and mandrel guided tap to chase the threads. the also use the same bushings and a mandrel guided cutter to clean up the lug abutments and action face.
There are those who use a tight mandrel and action truing jig to dial in the action and single point recut the threads, lug abuttments and action face.
There are those who use bushings and a bolt race cutter to cean up the bolt race so a larger precision ground bolt can be used.
There are those who know about bilateral lug engagement and 90degree bolt faces.
There are those who know about deburing and polishing the sear, trigger hanger, trigger.
There are those who know and understand setting the cocking piece ratio.
There are those who understand primary extraction i.e. bolt handle rear buffer relationship.
These are a few things you shuld discuss with your Savage Gunsmith before allowing him to do your work. Some gunsmith do a full Truing and Timing and some do a partial Truing and Timing. Make sure you get what you pay for. Savages shoot equally well with or without the barrel nut.
Custom barrels that are turned, threaded and chambered in the same setup tend to be more concentric. Cost vary according to what needs to be done. There needs to be a good line of communication between the customer and the smith. Honesty is always the best policy.

Another thread about SSS's poor customer service, here we go Olly! This type of thread continually surfaces and has for the last 6-7 years. You'll find disgruntled customers on "every" shooting board if you search. Bottomline is this is not new for SSS, it's just the way they do business, period. Some guys get good service, some don't, there's no consistency and the grumbling continues, nothing will change. If you could fast forward to next year, it will be the same. I've tried 3 times to do business with them, I know, I'm a slow learner. First 2 I canceled after 6-8 months of no action and communication. Last I tried to order action screws for a LRPV, boy was that a mess. Good news is that I've never heard of anyone not getting their money back, they got that part down.

Well here is an update. I Tried to cancell my order on Monady and guess what? no replies, so I filed a complaint with my CC comapny and got my card credited.

Placed an order for a target action with Larry at Great Scott Shooters this morning, By lunchtime he had called me back to say that Savage had one in stock and it was being shipped out today! All this without even giving him my payment info!

........... ....... The guy that runs the site is Lisa's son, so go figure on that one.
That explains alot of things regarding Savageshooters.

Nope this is not true, Jim Baker (Mr.F.) owner of Savageshooters.com is in no way any relation to Lisa, Fred, or anyone at SSS. Lisa does have a son named Jim Baker, but he is as diferent as night and day from the owner of Savageshooters. com. I dont think Lisa's son even owns a gun, let alone know anything about them, or computers, in fact I dont think he even live in Ohio.

It got so bad about customers complaining over at SavageShooters.com that they deleted the entire Customer Feedback section on the forum a couple of weeks ago. The guy that runs the site is Lisa's son, so go figure on that one.
The section was deleated because people could not play nice, and not personaly attack each other.

Sorry 82. Don't want to spread misinfo. Read that at SnipersHide. Deleted post. Don't understand why they deleted the entire section of the forum though. There was lots of great feedback for the vendors there. SSS took a beating in a few threads. Those all got locked, then the whole section went missing. Must have been a coincidence. I lot of guys are probably thinking SSS was getting called out for their crap customer service, so those threads were locked and the section deleted.
