Anybody try AA2520 in a .223?

Goes through the measure like water showing only .1 grain variance on my MXX123 but will it shoot as well as Varget?,which doesn't meter worth a crap!).

Danny,

I've seen some people mention using it over on nationalmatch.us... AA2230, AA2230C,when it was available), AA2460, and AA2520 all seem pretty well suited to the .223 Rem as far as burn rates go.

Some people reported large variations from lot to lot of 2520, and others mentioned seeing different countries of manufacture on different jugs of 2520.

If it works in your gun, I'd say go for it. 2460 and 69gr bullets worked extremely well out of a gun belonging to a friend of mine, and TAC works pretty well out of mine so far.

Good luck,

Monte

I'm going to give it a go next week heads up against my proven Varget load to see if it can equal the performance of Varget. I'll let you all know the results.
I will say one thing to throw and trickle up to weigh fifty charges of Varget takes me between twenty and twenty-five minutes using a Harrells Premium powder measure and finish weighing on my MXX123. Conversely it takes only FIVE minutes to throw fifty charges of AA2520!!!!!
I threw and weighed twenty charges and the deviation was only +/- a tenth to a tenth and a half grain. Wouldn't suit me for 600-1000 yard work since I'm anal about my long range loads, but for under 500 yards, and for gas gun play the time saved would be nice indeed.

Ive used 2520 and it really works good out of the Harrel. I originally used this powder for a prarie dog rifle in 223 with 75grain Amax. It made those large bacthes of ammo a snap, it also shot so well that I tried it in my service rifle and found it shot really well with 80's and 77's. I use it for my son's service gun since he is not up to Expert level yet and its super easy to load.
I use it but admit that my go to powder is still R15 on my Service rifle, the kids rifle gets 2520.

Danny, I've used a lot of AA2520 in 223s over the past 15+yrs., mostly with 60gr.HP Sierra varminter bullets. Accuracy & velocity have always been good in a variety of rifles, including a Sako Vixen & several factory & custom ARs.

However, what was said about large variations in burning rate with different lots of the stuff is very true - I've seen velocity differences of up to 200fps between some of the early lots & later surplus stuff. Not a real problem as long as you drop your charges and work back up each time you open a new jug, but definitely something to watch out for.
