Anybody shooting 223 or 223AI 80 grains at 2900-2950 fps

I noticed Hodgdon has a max .223 load of varget, 25 grains pushing an 80 grain match king to 2870, which is right around the corner. I am interested in trying an underdog 223 or 223 AI at 1000 yards with some expensive 80 grain super high bc lost river bullets.

The BC is .624 if you believe it and it should be at almost $1 each.

I ran some ballistics and at 2950 fps, it would match almost exactly a 6.5-284 140 berger out of the barrel at 2950 fps.

Probably not a good idea to push an 80 grain out of a normal 223 at 2900-2950, but I am thinking a 223 AI would probably be okay with moly bullets.

Anybody running loads like this ?? Thought I would ask prior to spending hours working up loads.

I have a fast twist Savage, and will probably go to a Pacnor barrel soon.

Thanks for the help.

Prepare to be disappointed unless things have changed...1000yd shooters have tried them...no one has ever shot well with them that I have heard...

Only know of one person who's tried the bullets you mentioned - he got lousy groups at 600 & a barrel full of copper fouling for his pains. I'm getting just over 3000fps with moly'd JLK 80s out of a 28" Krieger 6.5-twist spacegun upper, using N550 & CCI 450 or Rem 7-1/2 primers. Accuracy with the 80s has been consistently good at 600. I ordered this bbl. from John Holliger with a Wylde chamber, which has a throat that's a bit short to use with the Berger 90s, or I'd have tried them in it by now. Still have a few boxes of the last couple of lots of JLK 90s that Jimmy Knox made before the sale of his equipment, and they'll probably work in the Wylde chamber. But, the 80 load is performing very well, and I have several other rifles that give better performance at 1000, so there's not much incentive to spend the time & barrel life experimenting with the 90s anymore.

If you have a Savage, get a .473 bolthead and go to the 6BRX or Dasher with 105s or 107s. You will be much happier and successful. I would also recomend a custom barrel 30" to 32" vs a spin on 26" to 30". The 22s are great to 600 yards but just run out of gas at 1000.

Believe me others have tried before you.

My .223 made 3k out of a 24" barrel with 27.8-.9g of N550. I decided to back it off to 2950. Will finally stretch its legs to 1k next weekend. Not expecting to beat a .308.

You might want to call Barney Lawton Of Lawton barrels about the Lost River Bullets. Ive heard that he has a special land & grouve set up to make these Solid bullets shoot good. I have several here at the house. some J36 hunting bullets & J-40 Match bullets. I could not get any of them to shoot to my standard. The hunting bullets showed the best promis in a 280 ackeley Mule deer gun. I do not have a Lost River specific barrel from Mr Lawton & had not had great results.

Ill have to say that they are the most beutiful bullet you will put your eyes on. Of course they are around $1.00 a bullet.

Maybee when I win the LOTTO ill get a barrel fromBarney & try them again.
