Anybody look through your scope with both eyes open?

If I try to keep one eye closed I have a hard time seeing the target with my open eye, but I don't like the distraction of the open eye.

I have shot with people that keep both eyes open but have a flap on the end of the scope that restricts the view on the open eye. I just started using an eye path instead and it has helped me a lot.

can you just make an eye path some sort of paper plastic or can you just buy them? How big does the eye path need to be? I would like to try and just make something I have no idea blind I am

I'm right handed and left eye dominant so I can't see through a scope with both eyes open. I see just fine with my left eye closed but fatigue sets in pretty quick. Things get really tricky when I shoot a shotgun.

Shooting glasses with interchangeable lenses work well...

While trap shooting i have seen people who are cross eye dominant put a solid black sense on the side giving them a problem, then they can comfortably leave both eyes open.....

My buddy has to do this....

The problem with closing one eye is that it tenses the muscles in your face, which can affect your eyesight. One thing that may help is a piece of scotch tape (the translucent but not clear kind) to block the view on your non-dominant eye. This prevents the eye from focusing on anything, and allows you to relax and leave both eyes open. Leave a little folded-over tab on the end so when you're not shooting you can move it to the side of your glasses so it's not in the way. It may take a little experimentation to figure out the right spot, as it depends greatly on your head position.

It doesn't really matter. What you want is to keep your shooting eye relaxed. That's usually easier with both eyes open. For me, keeping both open is good and bad. Good because it makes it easier to notice a sudden wind change, and bad because it's distracting. But... (assuming right handed), keeping your left eye open doesn't help much for picking up flags on the right. So bottom line is that I've learned to watch the flags, pick a condition, and then quickly transition to the scope, relax my eye, and shoot. Sometimes both eyes are open, sometimes not. Depends on the level of distraction around me.

I have always shot with one eye closed not being told any different. I shot some benchrest comp at PA 1000 guess I never ask the question. but from now on it will be with both open and will rig up something to help, also it helps with blurred vision so I'm glad I found this out. thanks for all replies been very helpful

I use a piece of rubber, it has a hole cut out of it to slip over the ocular part of the scope and the extension blocks my left eye.
Or use an eye patch or something to block your other eye.
Keep them both open.
I have the same problem with my eyes switching views....very common

I grew up shooting in the woods with one eye closes. Now days, I shoot with both eyes open to watch for cant and wind flags / leaves.

It is a skill that must be honed beyond the norm to get the best use. Ive spent a lot of practice with both eyes open, mentally switching back and forth between which is the dominant one. Helps if i want to make a change to elevation while looking through the glass without disrupting my position. Ill just switch to left eye vision and adjust it, and back to right eye looking down range. Dont have to loose the cheek position or anything. Also for watching your bubble level while in position, watching wind flags and conditions, and adjusting your parallax. The more you practice the shorter the transition time, and the less you get a little foggy when switing between eyes (mentally). Also find it easier to not blink under hevy recoil when trying to spot your hit for some reason when both eyes are open. These are really just target applications but field use has even more benifits. Jesse

Balance and perception unchanged with both eyes open. Your title should be changed to something like ...Anybody, other than than those with one eye, shoot using just one?

Then it would be true that ..."in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king".

I'm right handed but left eye dominate. I shoot with my left eye closed. I can't use a patch over my left eye because I use it to look through my spotting scope. I've had numerous instructors in the military try to teach me to shoot with both eyes open but my left eye will not allow it. So I'm one of the odd ones I guess, but it has worked out for me pretty well.

Best practice I was taught as a little kid for shooting both eyes open was trap shoot right and left handed. Try doing that with one eye shut :)
