Anybody have a setup like this?

Savage 12 F T/R .308 with Bartlien 30" 1:11 finished with the Obermeyer Match reamer.

I am trying to find a load for this new barrel and I am not doing as well as I had hoped.

However, I had some 175gr SMK, 43gr Varget rounds leftover that I used with the stock barrel (touching the lands in the old barrel) ... jammed .006 in the new barrel.

This load tested better than: 155gr 2156 46.5 Varget.. touching the lands, .010, .015, and .020. And 155gr 2156 46.0 Varget touching the lands, .010 and .015.

The best load out of that group was 155gr 46.0 Varget touching the lands.

Does my setup like 175gr bullets better? Does my setup like being jammed better?

If somebody has a setup like mine, I would be interested in your load to give me another starting point.

I am using Laupa brass with CCI BR2 primers.

Noahbody,

Give the 175SMK`s a try at 2.800 and also at 2.810 (5 each) You may get better results with those of us that have had to stay within magazine length. The bullets jump to engage the throat on factory 700Rem`s does not seem to be a hinderance to accuracy....YMMV ;)

Unless your using Federal brass, you "should" be able to go higher with the Varget and find an accurate node.

Scott

I have very good luck with 168 smk's and 185 Berger Jag's,

Both are screamers. the 168's like to be .002 off the lands and the 185's like to be .050 off, yes .050.

one thing I learned the hard way(many of wasted bullets) with load workup is don't be afraid to jump the bullets. I worked off 25 thous and got "scared I was going away from accuracy loads, since most people are jamming right". But then you look at shooters in tac matches shooting magazine length on these 308s and are shooting very small groups out to distance. Also for example my FGMM factory ammo is close to 0.100 jump IIRC and it shoots itty bitty groups all the time. Tried load work up with 168 SMK at lands and just off and got nothing promising.

Have you worked up a load with the 175s or just trying? Same question about the 155s? Proper load work up or just guessing?

Hang in there with the 175s and that barrel and brass and powder you should find something good ;)

I have just built a load in a savage 110 with factory barrel using 175 SMKs. .05 in touching and jump .10. I ditched the jumped data as it was crap. The other two went vertical on the increasing powder velocity line until 44.8 then horozonital with a slight increase to 45.4 with average velocity spreads in single digits. Then went vertical speed wise and the spreads went to crap. The just touching groups were better than the .05 in. No barrel tuner was used but will get tried at a later date. Powder used was 2208 (varget), Winchester brass,Federal 210 primers. This rifle is a filler rifle while a new custom one is put together. Is your 1 in 11 twist fast enough for 175s beacuse i was told i needed 1 in 10 for mine using 175s and 1 in 9 for 180s.
I am going to repeat the test using 168 SMKs.

.010 jump may not have been enough to bring the horizontal back in. Try more in .003 increment and I will about bet money they will tighten up. Before you make the powder jump to cause the verticle....try deeper seating depths on those horizontal loads.

1 in 11 is plenty for 175 smk. I shot a 1 in 12 with berger 185 juggernauts and some even have used 1 in 13 with the 175 SMK.

I use a 1 in 10 for 215 bergers.

The optimum twist for a 175gr SMK is 11.25. You can shoot 185gr Bergers accurately out of a 12 twist barrel.

Where did you get the optimum twist rate info? NOT trying to start a war but velocity is part of the twist rate/stability calculation. So twist rate can change from barrel length to another barrel length and still maintain optimum spin stability.

If you are worried about stability, simply plug your numbers INCLUDING velocity into Bergers online calculator and you will have your answer....

Longer barrels can get away with slower twist rates than short ones if velocity increases from the length gain is enough.

From discussions with Bryan Litz...

The velocity spread at .10 jump was to great and deeper seating would impinge on powder capacity. I only obtained 2783 fps as it was which is barely enough from a 26 tube. This load is for 300 to 1000. The 100yd group was 2 bullet holes touching high and 1 1/2 wide.
I like your 1 in 10 for 215 bergers gives me more options to try. New rig will have a 30"
