Any Smith and Wesson Guys?

My wifes grandfather recently passed away, he had a couple S&W 22 Mag pistols, this one and one identical with the exception of a shorter barrel. Can anyone tell me what model they are? Any help is greatly appreciated

If you open the cylinder, you will see the model number on the inside of the yoke(where the cylinder hinges). Hope that helps. 22 mags bring a premium. Cant tell if iots stainless

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on when manufactured.
The barrel should be marked 22 MRF on the other side. Model number is most likely 48. The dash number (if there is one) will give a better idea of the actual manufacture time.

In stainless it is likely a Model 651 Kit Gun Stainless.
These are J-Frame as and the 48 is K-Frame blue steel.

The shorter barreled on likely differs from the 4" in the fact it is a fixed sight gun and has a 3" barrel vs. 4".

Should be a 6 in the model number if it's stainless.

It is marked 22 MRF . That is the only marking on the outside. other than the standard logo. So i assume it doesn't have a dash number

The M 650 came out in 1983.
The 651 came out in same year.
Production was stopped and restarted a couple times.
Open the cylinder and the SN and model number are stamped on the inside of the frame just below the barrel's forcing cone.

You have two very collectable guns there. The no dash stainless gun prices are on the rise and 22 mag brings a real premium.

The dash number is not on the barrel- open the cylinder and look inside on the frame under the serial number- should be right below the ser no with a number already quoted above

I have a S&W book that will tell us what we want to know. I really don't think yours is a model 48, it just looks too small. My guess is that its a model 51. If you want further help let me know. As I said I have a regular S&W book, you could learn plenty from bluebooks. I have 3 or 4 of those around here, the latest is probably 15-20 yrs old though

If you really want to know PM me and I'll give you my ph #, They are without question blue but that is a good thing. The guys that are telling you to look under the yoke are absolutely right but you need a book to tell when they were manufactured. To me the golden years are between late 60s' to mid 80s'. Before that the metalurgey wasn't good and after that they no longer paid real gun people. They had dickheads and women on the line and they just assembled stuff with a somewhat knowledgeable QC at the end of the line that was supposed to find anything
