Any recomendations on outfitters for PD

New to this forum but just came back from a PD hunt in SE Montana. Had a good time and got to shoot a lot. But it is a 2 day drive from Nampa Idaho to there. I'm hitting 80 in a few weeks and would like to find an outfitter nearer to me for hunting. So I'm asking you folks if there is an outfitter you have used that was honest and good to work with. I would like lodging, meals, a guide, and up to 1000 yards of range to shoot in. 3-400 rounds a day would be nice to figure on.

A little history I guess - spent 8 years in the Marines with a 14 month tour of Vietnam as a radio operator/FO. Got broke at one time and spent 3 years in the guard as an 11B40. Even got activated for a spell and went to Ft. Lewis to help setup an advanced infantry school for new Lts. I started hunting at age 5 or 6 with a 22 killing birds for my grandpa that were eating his grain. Yeah a dairy farm that my cousin still hay farms that space. I have only owned one factory box of hunting ammo. 30-30 for a deer hunt in Silver City, Idaho at age 12. From there I was given a Lee Loader, the kind you use a hammer to work, and basic instructions on its use. I've improved on that setup.

My son and I shot long range matches in the Northwest for many years but a nasty divorce for him and cancer for me slowed down our weekly trips. That and a nasty lack of reloading material. I own several rifles and handguns simply because I love them. My current varminter is a Ruger M77 in 220 Swift. It's a tack driver with sub 1/2 moa accuracy. I've recently built a 223 AR that has proven its worth on this last hunt. Hit a baby at 425 yards using holdover and Kentucky windage. For longer stuff I have a 308 that my son used in sniper matches. One of the last rifles George Veiss built. I hit one dog at 680 and his neighbor at 700 yards the first day. That was fun. I was hoping for 1000 yards but it didn't happen.

So that's a brief on me. I've laid in the dirt, ate mud, and endured every hardship known, including being targeted seriously by folks paid to kill me, and really enjoyed the luxery of a guided hunt. So my request is as above. And I thank you in advance for any assistance in my search. My son is going with me this next trip - makes me smile - :)

Bad River Bucks and Birds in S.D. Haven't p.d. hunted in the last few years so I am not up to date, but shooting p.d.s has gotten so popular everything is thinning out. Plus with the plague and farmers poisoning, things aren't as good as they used to be. But we had a good time there and the food and accommodations were excellent.

Hello Steve & welcome to the forum! Sorry but I don't have a good PD recommendation for you. But I just wanted to comment that I like your thread starter. You might think about adding it to your profile page.

Mongo Chicago - Thanks for the recomendation in SD but I'm looking for something a lot closer. This last hunt left me exhausted from the drive portion. Western Wyoming or I had even read of a dirt rat hunt in Oregon that might even be closer.

pertnear - I'll think about that - websites are always a bit of a challenge and I was going to add a photo, soon as I download it, of the 680 yard shot. That old Remy shoots so much better than I do that I was pleased with those shots. I met another shooter that had one identical to mine built by George. Exact same bullet and Varget load. Shot just a well too. But Thanks for the bump on adding it.

A few years ago my friend worked for Bear Track Outfitters in Buffalo, Wyoming. They offered PD shoots with guide, rooms and meals available.
First class outfit.

Yeah I know, my first was 1990.
As far as I know you pretty much gotta get east of Bozeman to start getting into any P.D's, got a few around me but not alot.

Welcome and thank you for your service. I'm new as well. A ton of experience and knowledge here. I've been out of the varmint scene for 20+ years. I'm currently getting back into the saddle, rebuilding my arsenal. I was introduced to sage rat hunting in 1998. Fell in love immediately! Eastern Oregon might be closer for the sage rats. Just saying.

Mike in Oregon, I have come to the same conclusion. Crane is an area I am familiar with, one of my friends cowboyed over there for years. I even played a gospel session there once. I play guitar. There is an outfit called raterators that looked good. I mean anyone who would chase a badger down in shorts and cowboy boots has to be alright! If you are familiar with something else let me know. As far as my service you're welcome.

Norton, I live in what some friends call "Rat Heaven", and am a rabid sage rat and rockchuck shooter. There's one outfit that can supply superlative rat shooting in the Burns/Crane area; "No Off Season" run by Tim Titus. He can supply overnight accommodations, meals and benches with some excellent shooting ops.

Tim has been at this for quite a few years now, and is "one of us" so to speak. If you dial him up, tell him I sent you.
