ANY PRAIRIE DOG TRIPS CANCELLED??

I am not cancelling any of my trips for shooting pd. As to traveling bring wipes with you. Maybe a spray bottle with some rubbing alcohol in it and use it. Having some respirators may be a good idea.

It could be a pain to bring enough food with. Thinking ahead always wins.

I have contacts I can call and not need to knock doors.

My crew and I just cancelled our week long ground squirrel trip here. The residents of the sparsely populated areas we hunt DO NOT want outsiders coming to their areas for fear of infection. Can't blame them, and right now the thing to consider is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. We all take travel trailers, so don't depend on motels, but it's just not worth the risk of infection....us or them.

Only the second time in over 50 years of rat shooting we've had to cancel. Bummer, but hey, we're all in this one together.......

Stay home, stay safe.

Good for you, lead by example!!! The sage rats and PD's aren't going anywhere and just think how many there will be next year.

I'm actually a little surprised at some of the selfish responses.

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe, in South Dakota, has closed prairie dog hunting and spring turkey hunting on the reservation to all non tribal members.
Money will be returned for all license purchases, per their website.

This is good to know. Wife and I were hoping to head out West in early June. We pull a toy hauler. It takes 4 days to get where we go but can we go across state lines? Then there is the issue I did not think of - would we be welcome from Florida?

Missed the trip for two years as the wife went through cancer issues. Now recovered (hopefully) we sure don't want to be in or create any problems.

what Part of stay home don’t you understand, and also people don’t want to have visitors from out of area .

Gonna catch a lot of crap for this but can't help it. For the last 20 yrs out of staters flock in by the hundreds, trespass, litter, etc with their expensive equipment and shoot anything in sight at any range. Why, mainly so they can brag on the net latter about how many rounds they shot and how far they 'almost' hit one!!!!! They claim the town as "theirs" for the week or so they are around, remember that out of state license says so!!! Landowners have poisoned dozens of towns around here because they finally got tired of the late and weekend phone calls, fixing fence, rounding up livestock, bouncing over ruts left when muddy and all else that goes with having a pdog town. Local people don't have a $5K rig to shoot 1K yds at the only thing still out of the hole. Cannot take their kids out with their .22 and teach them about hunting and shooting because it is kinda hard to dope wind and range when you have a $25 scope on a .22 and the closest dog poking his head out is 526yds!

HEH, MAYBE NOW THOSE OUT OF STATERS CAN REPAY THE LOCALS AND THEIR KIDS BY BRINGING THEM SOMETHING.......LIKE COVID 19!!!!!! MAYBE THE NICE WAITRESS OR C-STORE EMPLOYEE WOULD LIKE IT ALSO.

Just something selfish, self absorbed people could consider! No, you aren't doing us a FAVOR!

I guess I could talk bad about all those rich rancher cowboys that come to my town during MASTERS WEEK
tearing up the town. Staying drunk the whole week. Leaving local homes TRASHED.. Tearing up EVERY local golf course from Augusta to Atlanta, Savannah, Beaufort, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, Columbia, Greenville and back again. With their $10,000 scalped Masters Badge these Western cowboy ranchers think they own the town and ALL the Hillbillys in GA,SC,NC, ALABAMA, and Tennessee.. I live thru it tho.. lts our Corona Virus week every year. lts a free country. So, Come One, Come ALL. Tear up our town, our local homes, businesses, golf courses... Some even come and shoot a few Hillbillys.. We may shoot back too;)

Well, as an Out-Of-State prairie dog hunter (as we don't have them in my home state) I can see how you are upset with hunters who act like you described in your post, but that isn't what our group of hunters do.

I have been shooting prairie dogs since that 1960's, and have learned:

Have appropriate licenses. Know the local hunting regs.
Get permission before hunting.
Don't shoot towards people, vehicles, roads, houses, out buildings, stock water tanks or livestock.
Respect fences.
Leave the gates the way you found them.
Use the roads or two tracks, don't make new ones.
Don't litter: pick up brass, take trash bags in the vehicle and use them, use a catch can when cleaning bore to retain patches. Leave nothing behind.
Don't rut up the roads when muddy. (heck we don't try to shoot dogs when it rains)

There are probably a few more that I have forgotten because they are "what you are supposed to do" and they are so inbred that I don't even think about them any more. I know we are doing it OK when we are invited back by the landowners.

Of course if there is a possibility of an infectious disease, don't make the trip.

The other side of the coin is:
Four hunters for a 5 day hunt means 24 hotel nights, typically paying a guide for 20 hunter days, ( plus tip), at least 66 meals, money spent in local food, liquor stores, gun stores, gas stations etc., means we leave a couple thousand dollars each to the out of state economies.

So if you want us to replace a few of those jerk hunters, consider inviting us to shoot at your location.

Instead of just going off half cocked maybe you should ask some questions. Well as I have stated hundreds of times I am from ND. Not technically required to stay at home.

Did you even read my post? I am sure you did but did not under stand what I put in it. I will break it down for you. Wipes. I have well, dozens of cases of them. When you get gas do you not use gloves and wipe down the stuff you will touch? Then wipe down after you are done?

Respirators (Protip) If you ever do anything that produces dust, partials, or anything that needs to be filtered out you better have a respirator or gas mask. Dust masks are a joke. Yes even those n95 masks they talk about have never sealed as well as they should. So yes now as I have to get parts for my business I drive around wearing a respirator. I have made one modification to them. (protip) I have made a little bag that goes over the exhaust. Once this blows over and stuff comes available. (protip) Everyone should have a respirator and several filter replacement sets. What is crazy is how cheep cases of filters where even last October.

Food. Well again I am blessed with the 7 p's of success. I have enough that I have not really needed to go to the store and buy anything. The fresh stuff is needed but nothing else. When I am going PD shooting I will have plenty to bring with. While I do like eating out. I will not nor do I normally when I am driving. This kind of goes with hotels. I am not planning on staying in one. Actually I never do when shooting PD. I just bring the trailer or tent it.

As I have stated in the past I have one of those old gnf map books with many extra sheets of paper in it. (Protip) Those sheets have many contacts along with best times to call. This means I have all the access already setup. As stated in my post I will not have to knock doors. Being out in the field will put us much farther than anyone in any town or city could ever hope for. (Protip) I also make an effort to call my contacts every few months. So yes when we go this time there is no reason to knock on anyone's door or even face to face. Unlike most PD shooter I do keep in contact with my land owners. I have been known to send stuff to them around the holidays or just when ever. It is amazing how much a rancher likes to get a big box of wipes during calving season. I have also sent coffee to some and they loved it.

Kind of off topic but related in how I have gotten so much land to hunt on. When I first started out I gave my number out to land owners. Telling them to call if coyotes were ever a problem. Call any time. Back then I lived maybe 80 min away from the farthest landowner. One did call me very early. I got up and drove out. I do not remember how many coyotes I shot that night but it was enough to impress the land owner. Word spread. Before I knew it I had more access than I knew what to do with.

Take a deep breath and relax... Most here are like minded people, and there is no need to go after each other.

This topic came up and I said no I have not canceled, and I still have not canceled postponed from the original date yes, maybe.

For some of you that know nothing of me and or others to make assumptions we would put those friends and families we may be visiting the n this trip, don’t ass-u-me.

And whirlwinds comment I know the type you mention. I was born into agriculture and cattle. Don’t lump folks all into one pile because of a few bad apples. I have went on hunts and never fired a shot, fixed fence, hauled corn and beans moved equipment from day light till dark, dehorned cattle and hauled cattle, then came home and declare it was a good time and go back and do it again.

I have seen the type of the gates open “come on in”. I don’t operate that way and honestly I don’t think anyone on this board does.

Gee. Every time the wife and I went to Wyoming we paid for an RV spot, visited local bars and restaurants, met lots and lots of nice people and were happy to contribute to the economy. Many invited us to their private places to shoot and we never took them up on it. Always been fun to just go to BLM and public areas, park alone, find a few dogs to shoot and have fun.

Never thought, like all the tourists that come here to clog up Florida, that we were an unwanted burden. Never even got the hint.

The Varmint Hunter from Pierre South Dakota ruined the wild wild west....... I agree with you.

I sure miss Varmint Hunter.. They helped open up the West to a whole New Generation of Varmint Shooters.
BTW---BLM LAND belongs to ALL Americans... WE own it just as much as you local boys:p
