Gonna catch a lot of crap for this but can't help it. For the last 20 yrs out of staters flock in by the hundreds, trespass, litter, etc with their expensive equipment and shoot anything in sight at any range. Why, mainly so they can brag on the net latter about how many rounds they shot and how far they 'almost' hit one!!!!! They claim the town as "theirs" for the week or so they are around, remember that out of state license says so!!! Landowners have poisoned dozens of towns around here because they finally got tired of the late and weekend phone calls, fixing fence, rounding up livestock, bouncing over ruts left when muddy and all else that goes with having a pdog town. Local people don't have a $5K rig to shoot 1K yds at the only thing still out of the hole. Cannot take their kids out with their .22 and teach them about hunting and shooting because it is kinda hard to dope wind and range when you have a $25 scope on a .22 and the closest dog poking his head out is 526yds!
HEH, MAYBE NOW THOSE OUT OF STATERS CAN REPAY THE LOCALS AND THEIR KIDS BY BRINGING THEM SOMETHING.......LIKE COVID 19!!!!!! MAYBE THE NICE WAITRESS OR C-STORE EMPLOYEE WOULD LIKE IT ALSO.
Just something selfish, self absorbed people could consider! No, you aren't doing us a FAVOR!
Well, as an Out-Of-State prairie dog hunter (as we don't have them in my home state) I can see how you are upset with hunters who act like you described in your post, but that isn't what our group of hunters do.
I have been shooting prairie dogs since that 1960's, and have learned:
Have appropriate licenses. Know the local hunting regs.
Get permission before hunting.
Don't shoot towards people, vehicles, roads, houses, out buildings, stock water tanks or livestock.
Respect fences.
Leave the gates the way you found them.
Use the roads or two tracks, don't make new ones.
Don't litter: pick up brass, take trash bags in the vehicle and use them, use a catch can when cleaning bore to retain patches. Leave nothing behind.
Don't rut up the roads when muddy. (heck we don't try to shoot dogs when it rains)
There are probably a few more that I have forgotten because they are "what you are supposed to do" and they are so inbred that I don't even think about them any more. I know we are doing it OK when we are invited back by the landowners.
Of course if there is a possibility of an infectious disease, don't make the trip.
The other side of the coin is:
Four hunters for a 5 day hunt means 24 hotel nights, typically paying a guide for 20 hunter days, ( plus tip), at least 66 meals, money spent in local food, liquor stores, gun stores, gas stations etc., means we leave a couple thousand dollars each to the out of state economies.
So if you want us to replace a few of those jerk hunters, consider inviting us to shoot at your location.
