Any luck with painting stocks?

I'm thinking my next rifle may be a Savage F class in 6.5x284. I've already got Tikka T3 Sporter which has a nice laminate stock. The savage stock doesn't do much for me and there have got to be a blue million of them in circulation. I'm thinking if I get one I'll paint it before shooting before it gets dirty and oily. A buddy at work has some experience painting cars and I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping. Can I just use automotive paint, House of Kolor has a ton of nice affordable options.

Auto paints work fine. I like some of the candy colored paints like candy apple red and cover with automotive clear coat.

I've used the house of Kolor spray cans and then the spray max 2K clear coat on a couple of different stocks. I don't have spraying equipment and only wanted to do some stocks for myself, so going this route made sense for the dollar and cents. And I think they have turned out great.

My paint jobs on hunting rigs. Simple whether by can or automotive spray rig.

If your going to paint a synthetic stock be sure to wash it down with a good solvent.
The release agent don't like paint sticking to it, it needs removed...

Before you paint, talk to the body shop guys about the correct primer to use first. I have had good luck with Dupont self etching primer. Automotive paints have a tendency to chip without the primer first.

Use a "Grease & Wax" remover prior to paint.

I use a Pre-paint formula made by "Dupli-color" called "Grease & Wax remover" Works on all materials, plastic, wood, metal, glass etc. I find it in with the Automotive paint and stuff.
Wipe the surface well with it, let it dry and then paint. It's the only product I trust.

A true candy paint (transparent),over laminated wood gives it a one of a kind look. The same goes for candy over the McMillan swirl patterns. Several guys at our local match has them done this way, and each one is eye catching.

Painting stocks surely can be done, and done well. Luck has NOTHING to do with it.

It seems like Plasti Dip would be a good product and its removable.

Plasti Dip.. That's a huge no. Might as well wrap in electrical tape.

Just don't forget (and your buddy at work will probably beat it into you ), that 85% of any paint job is the surface prep before the first coat of primer, starting, as suggested above, with application of a good grease and wax remover.
