Any compelling reason not to buy an Atlas Tactical

Ledd,

Nice write up and mill work for fitting the action. Sometimes simple jobs seem to just keep going and going. Lol. Looking forward to a load write up when you get too it.:D:D

Thanks Paul. Its a good action. Just want to let people know that although it is considered a 700 footprint, it will take some work to make it fit in 700 stocks.

The rifle looks great so far. Alex did a heck of a job on the barrel and brake. I will post a new thread with some photos when I have it all buttoned up and shooting :)

Ledd Slinger,

You're killing me man; that's going to be awesome when it's all said and done.

Mine should be done quicker than expected (although what you pointed out may delay things). I have 3 rifles at the smith getting new barrels (among other things) right now, and I think my smith took pitty on me, because he asked which one I wanted done ASAP. I told him the Atlas Tac, and he said he'd get working on it that day.

I'll upload pics as soon as mine gets back.

What's yours chambered in? It looks like we both think alike on bolt handles. ;)

Yeah that stock bolt knob is one of the ugliest pieces of machining I've seen. When I first pulled the action out of the box I gagged and tasted a little throw up in the back of my mouth then immediately ordered a new knob. Lol

My rifle is chambered in 300 Norma Mag Improved.
Has an AG carbon fiber stock, Proof carbon fiber barrel, Beast titanium 4 port brake, and PTG dbm. Weighed it before bedding. Came in at 9.4 oz. with scope rail, DBM and empty magazine installed, AND the bipod on the stock. No scope, rings, or bedding when weighed. Without the bipod its probably around 8 lbs or so.

She's setting in the stock right now with bedding curing under the receiver and scope rail. Once that's done, I just need to bed my scope in the rings and she'll be ready to bark ;)

Whose bolt knobs are ya'll using? I don't love my Atlas stock knob either.

I plan to use it as a general plinker, but also to put my Phoenix bipod up front and shoot it informally in LR F-Class. I may give a PRS match a try too...who knows.

I also have some slightly taller rings on order. The Vortex ones I'm using .87 are just a hair too low. As you can see you can actually put a scope on there, but it just kisses the barrel. Should have another set in tomorrow.

My bolt knob is a NDZ Tactical tear drop T6 aluminium with 5/16-24 threads. Very affordable and as good quality as anything else out there. I've tried a million different bolt knobs over the years and I see no difference between a $15 bolt knob and $60 bolt knob. I also prefer aluminum knobs to save weight.

That is a fine looking rifle.

Very nice :)

Really like that new A6 stock with the modern lines. I bet she'll shoot very nicely

I just received my newly barreled Kelby Atlas action today and began the stock fitting for bedding. There's always something that needs to be tweaked on a stock before bedding, but this was a little more than usual.

The Kelby Atlas most definitely is NOT a "drop in" action for 700 stocks. Was hoping to get the barreled action set in bedding this evening, but had to do too much inletting.

- Had to open up the inletting for clearance of the trigger hanger at the tang and rear mag well area.

- Milled the back of the DBM mag well to allow clearance for the front of the trigger hanger.

- Had to mill out the front of the DBM trigger guard to allow clearance of trigger body. Seems trigger sits a little farther forward in the Atlas than a 700.

- Had to open up the bolt release inletting to allow fit of the heavy duty bolt stop which is also longer than a normal stop/release.

- Had to enlongate the ejection port inletting on the stock to match the larger receiver ejection port. Tho this is a Lapua action so this may not be an issue on standard/magnum long actions.

Finally got a good fit to the stock! Will finish touch up painting when bedding job is finished.

Thank you for sharing as I have an Atlas waiting to go. What stock are you using?

Took mine out and shot it today; that action is slick as snot whenever it's greased up. Mine is two finger bolt open/close.

As is customary on all internet 6.5 creedmoors, it "ran them in the same hole" all day (seriously though, it shot really well).

Makes me want to grab another one ASAP.

Ive never had to modify bottom metal for the trigger to not hit it. What kind of bottom metal? I do however always inlet the back of the magwell. Not a big deal as it takes 2 seconds and the bottom metal gets cerakoted anyways. Several actions out there don't match 700 ejection ports perfectly. That's why I order stocks for the exact action Ill use. In fact a Lone Peak lapua bolt face fuzion won't eject a loaded 300 norma improved round. Too short of a ejection port and the bolt goes a lot further behind the rear cut of the port. However a fired case will eject no problem. The kelbly hangers aren't adjustable however they do have offset trigger hangers they will swap out for free if a guy needs one. Its definitely the smoothest cycling/feeding lapua action that Ive felt. And like you said. For $1100 you cant beat it for what all it comes with.
