I've traveled throughout the poconos but never see any large enough fields to hunt groundhogs .

you have to get on one side of the hill and shoot across to the other side to be able to see much. I never hunted G-hogs up there but been up threw there. kind of similar to the south west PA close to the Uniontown Mountain, Appalachian Mountains. we are kind of what they call the foot hills.

Ok I see what you mean .thank you

I was at the shooting range talking to a few guys and we were talking about shooting 600-800 yards and one guy said there is nowhere you can shoot that far around here. I turned around and said right there looking at the big hill behind us around 800 yards away. he said well if you want to shoot over there. some other guys were talking about this thicket and how many deer were in there but you could not really hunt it..I said hun I shot 2 over there last year I just get across the hill from it and look down into it and pick it apart with binoculars till I find one. any where form 400 yards to 600 or so. I thought wow really we been hunting like that since I was a kid it is the only way if you want to shoot something. we hunt places where my 2,500 yards range finder wont read. but its not hard to find a 1,000 yard shot if you want one. I try to keep them under 700 but I sit a few places where I can range out to 1K you can see a lot of ground I can spend most of the day with binoculars stuck to my head.

Those opportunities went away about 40 years ago ....before the NY /NJ invasion. You could also snowmobile from town to town through harvested fields. Most fields are now developments....great place for lots of deer to use as a sanctuary during daylight hours. The Poconos of today hasn't the remotest semblance of the way it appeared back then.

Good post. I have been concentrating mostly in SW Pennsylvania for hunting hogs and this year will spend time in central Pa.

I understand those that can't imagine our long shots when they look at small fields. You need to look both ways to find the best shots. If you are in a small field with hogs, is there a way to go elsewhere and shoot into it or can you see other open areas from your location. I often am shooting over wooded areas and country road to another high hill like I am on. I am not concerned with recovering my victims.

Yes. I got above a tree line and shot over the tree tops down across a valley over a old closed road into the woods across from me.. Only 410 Yards on the range finder but was one of the toughest shots I ever took. on a white tail.
one shot...then I drove around the hill and hiked into where I shot it..Had a few guy's meet me there and they said where were you and I pointed up there..man it looked like over a thousand yards away and impossible but was only 410 on the range finder and I only dialed 3.9min so about right. I would say I was on a 20 deg slope shooting out of a slip in the hill between tree branches into the trees on the other side of the hill, in just a awkward angle..extremely tough shot.
But you can sit there and glass a lot of real estate. I hate to say I missed one at 650 Yards..I shot, could not mark it. the deer just keep feeding along I have no idea what happened . Very unusual..so I just watched it feed of into a thicket.
But we have shot a few from there.
