Anschutz stock quandary.

Lee,

I don't know if it was a factory decision after the fact, or they just followed common parlance. Someone with more time in their hands, and access to contemporary journals, might be able to pin it down. That said, 1600 seems the obvious answer to describe something between 14 and 18.
Tim,
Probably to avoid wrong bolt parts information.

Lee

The "wedge" that was referred to does attach to the rail, however it is a true wedge shape that makes the bottom of the stock flat vs sloped as in the photo.
this is the correct answer, had the anschutz product number will try to find on Nordic marksman website for canada

Actually the 'black' looks like a completely different piece than the wood.
The rider looks better on the black
I have this one. It’s wood painted black.

With this wedge it handles quite well on a rest. Certainly not quite as well as a purpose built benchrest rifle on a one piece rest, but if the barrel is good and the ammo is a well suited lot, you can shoot pretty solid scores with this setup.
The next step up is a one piece competition rest and benchrest rifle. That’s much more expensive.

The Benchrest Wedge is at best a stopgap. It is relatively narrow and as a result doesn't add to lateral stability which can be important with the added height the wedge brings.

An effective way to make a 1607 barreled action into a rifle suitable for benchrest shooting is to use the Anschutz BR50 stock mentioned by Tim Slater. They are available at Nordic Marksman in Canada and can be shipped to the US.

Here's a 1974 1407 barreled action in an Anschutz BR50 stock. The bolt safety on that model means that the safety can't be operated in the BR50 stock, but on the bench many don't use a safety.
