Anschutz 1913 or custom ?

Our club started shooting 22 rimfire benchrest and small bore silhouette last year I would like to get a 22lr benchrest gun, a couple of the guys are shooting the Anschutz 1913 br 50 and a couple 64 S BR's and a couple 40x 22's.
Would you buy the 1913 or build a custom I don't mind spending the money on either I would rather spend the money once though.

Find a used BR gun, Killough shooting sports usually has some, sometimes Carl at champion shooters supply does as well.

I just reacquired an Anschutz 64 silhouette I had used from the late 1980's till 2004. The rifle has always prefered Eley or RWS ammo and now has a tuner. I will be checking on this rifles accuracy and the barrel tuner over the next few weeks at 200yds. Good luck on your purchase.

Get a custom rifle built. I shoot informal and sanctioned rimfire benchrest matches and the factory Anschutz rifles are not competitive with custom rifles. I would not buy a used benchrest gun unless you can shoot it first.

I have a 54 br 50 1913. It is a fine rifle but if I had my druthers and foresight, I would have had a custom rifle built new.

I would hesitate in purchasing a used rifle. I have done so and it never turned out good for me.

Quality, low milage, used guns come up all the time. With a little homework a good piece is not tough to secure.

Called Dan Killough today, I'm going to go that route new gun with Stiller 2500x, Shillen ratchet barrel, Harrell tunner, Bix n Andy trigger in a Edge light varmint fill stock.
If they can get it to me in the time they said I'll be very happy even if they don't I will still be happy to spend the money on something I want and not settle for something I can get now like a Annie or a used gun

rich44,
Consider this before you decide. I've competed in Rimfire before and people suggest this or that in terms of the rifle to buy or "have built." Dan Killough and his guys are a super source of rifle and custom actions. But if you go custom, whose gonna build that rifle for you???? BIG CONSIDERATION. I've not known Dan Killough to build rifles. And in my experiences, truly GOOD Rimfire Gunsmiths are hard to find and are backlogged forever. When I was considering having a BR Rimfire rifle built for local competitions, it wasn't the money involved, but the time estimate from two of the Rimfire Gunsmiths (who build serious competition rifles) with estimated of 8 - 12 months. SO line up a Gunsmith and talk to him about what he likes and what works. Talk to some of the shooters winning in serious nationwide Rimfire competitions for in put. And for what it's worth, I had an Anschutz 64MPR that came out of the box and I bought a Harrel tuner from Dan Killough. And I was wining (or placing in the top 3) when shooting against some custom rifles have top brand actions. It's irritating when an $1100 rifle (less the scope) outshoots a $3200 rifle in competition. But at the same time, I'd never seriously recommend sitting down to a regional, state or higher competition with that Anschutz as those Stiller and even Hall actions in the right hands, will do a number. BTW, my rifle loved Federal Ultra Match UM22 which shot the best in 50 yd/50 mtr competitions and kept up with those beautiful other custom rigs locally. Good luck!

P,S, Ops. You posted your choice just before I got my lines in. Dan will not give you bad info. And hope you enjoy that new Stiller. They're very fine actions so long as you do your part. And once you find the ammo that baby likes, you'll be competitive alright.

I went with Killough too. You will not be disappointed. I went with the Jewell trigger but otherwise our builds are identical. I bought a 1/2 case of Tenex. First time at the range I shot a 248-15x using range flags only. Need more practice and am sure this gun is capable of being competitive. Good luck.
