Anschutz 1771 17 Hornet

Looking at possibly purchasing a Anschutz in 17 Hornet, any amongst you have any real time with one, are they worth the cost over the CZ, how's the accuracy, fit, finish and overall handling, Thanks fellas

I don't know what the Anschutz 17 Hornet cost or what they're worth but the CZ 527's in 17 Hornet have gone crazy in the prices I'm seeing. I bought a couple CZ 527 17HH shortly before CZ stopped making the 527 and new they were right around 600 bucks which I think was appropriately priced but now you see LNIB ones going for 1500-2000 which IMO is way way more then they are worth. I'm not sure who all besides Savage even makes a 17 Hornet anymore. The CZ 527 and Ruger 77/17HH were the two best options without spending a fortune.

Anschutz is known for making pretty good stuff and the little 17HH does make for a fun little pee shooter so if you can pick it up for any kind of decent price I'd nab it.

I bought an Annie a year ago. I looked at the CZ's, as I have quite a few in rimfire. For a little more money the Anschutz is the way to go. Fit and finish are excellent. I bought a bunch of factory ammo that shoots ok. Haven't done much load dev., but it is a shooter.

Got mine from Eurooptic. They don't have one on their web site, but they have one listed on Gunbroker now. If you call and ask they will sell it to you direct, for less than it's listed for.

FWIW, I use 1680 w/20gr Vmax in both of my CZ 527 Varmint 17HH and it works really well for me. I have a friend that has the identical CZ 17HH to mine but he loads CFE BLK with same 20gr Vmax and his combo shoots really well for him too. If were to switch from 1680 to something different it would be CFE BLK.

For a couple of varmint seasons I fielded my CZ 457 Varmint HB 17 HMR. Then I happened onto an Anschutz 1715 HB 17 HMR at a local pawn shop and sold the CZ. The overall fit and finish on the Annie, as well as the accuracy put the CZ on the selling block soon after coming home. The comparisons were not even close. The Annie reeks of quality overall.

I shoot some small ranches locally here, and the HMR is quiet, even quieter than my 20VT and 221FB, so some of the ranchers prefer I use the HMR when visiting their ranch for rockchucks. When I do, it's head shots only.

A good day at one of 'my' ranches with the Annie:

The CZ and the Anschutz are both good rifles, but the Annie to me, is "the one".

The annie is better quality overall, however the CZ will shoot with it all day long, however for what a nib cz will cost you on gunjoker ,get the annie, prices are about the same,I wouldn't trade my cz for annie on even trade because it won't shoot better than this.I shot my doctor friends ,better wood ,trigger equal, better shooter as good as mine, not better.

I have a anshutz 1717 in hornet. It's very accurate with a great barrel and two stage trigger. I really like the rifle in general. I use 25gr V-max and they consistently put a 5 shot group within a half inch at 100 yards. I shoot it with a big suppressor and recoil is non-existent. Even my 6 yr old shoots targets with it. I use it to knock over hares and rabbits on the farm out to 250 yards.

However, there were a couple of things I'm not mad about. The first is the cheek rest. It's too low for me, so I had to add a Bradley cheek riser to make it fit.

The other issue I have with it is the action. The ejector is not sprung. It's dependent on the speed to which you open it to eject the brass. If you open it slowly, it doesn't throw brass. I've not seen this design before and I don't like it. But it's not hard to live with.

I've not shot a CZ. So I can't compare I'm afraid. But if you don't mind the ejection design and perhaps run really low rings, the anshutz is a great rifle.

Be aware the Anschutz 177x series has the bolt lugs cut into the barrel shank, which means it cannot be rebarreled. 17Hornet is not a very hot cartridge so that works in your favor.
