Anschutz 1712 ejection and misfires

I have relatively new anshutz 1712 which is the match version with 54 repeater action, 2 stage trigger and match chamber. This is the later version with the side mount safety rather than the early cocking piece wing safety

Anywhooo I'm having issues getting reliable ejection. It will work 90-95% if I work the bolt very briskly but even then the case barely dribbles out the port and lands withing 12" of the rifle. Cycling the bolt this hard isn't good for consistency and maintaining a good position. Some ammo is better than others and thicker rims seem to help

Second one is I get fairly regular misfires. Some ammo is better than others but nothing seems to be 100% reliable. Some have said that ammo can be better or worse but I would have thought eley black, tenex, lapua etc would be 99% or better?

Im not a rimfire expert but I know my way around centre fire rifles very well. I've done all the usual disassemble bolt and trigger, clean and inspect, clean the action and clean the chamber. I haven't found anything obvious but I did notice the extractors are stamped rather than machined.

Doing some reading I don't seem to be the only one who has this problem with this action but no one seems to have a definite fix. This is a very accurate and nice rifle so I'm more reluctant to cut and shut without clear direction that I would be with most.

If you haven't already, go to rimfircentral.com and do some searching, many posts about this problem.

Just for anyone doing a search on here in the future. This is the link to the sticky on rimfire central discussing in detail how to modify the extractors.

Thanks again smokinjoe!

One of the weaknesses of using a spring clip to work as both a retainer and spring for the extractor and holder. check to see if the extractor claw has a big gap above the rim of the fired case, it should be as close to the rim to give tight hold against the bolt face this will determine how much of a kick the ejector will apply to send the case out the port. here is an example of too much gap above the rim.

best fix is hand fit the extractor and holder but as a mass produced rifle not possible

Funny you say that because the link is basically describing the opposite! They are talking about reliving the inner surface of the extractor to create more clearance

I was thinking similar to you and that's why cases with thicker rims seem to be more reliable

The angle of the extractor also makes a difference as well this why I said best fix is hand fitting them. you want to see them angle inward, towards the center of the bolt face so it is always applying pressure against the case and holder opposite of the extractor.
I bet if you were to take some fired cases and of both thicker and thinner ones and just watch as you cycle the bolt you will see what is going on, you already kind of know the thicker rims eject better.

sorry to hear about the ejection issues but not surprised, but mostly wondered why Anschutz has not addressed the issue yet. It's an easy fix, so no worries. My 1712 also has ignition problems, along with the anemic ejection, even after replacing the springs with the J&P set. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy another, but it really grates on me that Anschutz gets a pass on this while no other rifle in this price range would.

Will and Hi have you guys both done similar mods. Ie REDUCED the clearance between the extractor and bolt face?

I can do that pretty easy with a spot of TIG on the back end and file to suit and just tweak the angle of the front end.

Yeah everything is so nicely made, blued and so accurate on paper. . . . . . Then you pull out this BS metal stamped extractor!!

Will I've have a few experienced rimfire BR shooters say it's the ammo or the way the ammo has been stored or transported before I received it that causes misfires. Did a new spring kit or anything you did significantly improve ignition over and above changing ammo? Eley bugholes but is probably the worst so far on if ignition

I done extractors on Baity custom Falcons and H&R M12's all my Anschutz's are match action and never had a problem with ejection.
I never worked on a 1700 series rifle but the setup is similar to the Falcon with the spring clip and the Falcon actually uses Savage RF extractors and spring clips. on fitting the extractor you don't touch the front or claw except to clean up rough edges and polish it. the angle is done on the body of the extractor that rides in the slot of the bolt body. you take a extractor and place it in the slot and see if the angle of claw tip is parallel to the bolt face if the angle is parallel to the bolt face you want to make it face slightly in. you can do this by taking a little material off the pivot point to change the profile so it is angled and will cause the extractor to till inward under the spring clip this will cause a downward pressure on the rim and provide a tight grip.
I hope this explains what I mean by angel inward.
