Another Vartarg neck question....

This is starting to get funny...seems I take one step forward and one step back...

I have Lapua and Nosler .221 Fireball Brass. I thought that a .226 bushing would be enough to bring the new brass to .20 caliber and begin cleaning up the necks. After the brass springs back, the neck is .232.

What size neck bushing are you Vartarg owners using to initially size Fireball brass? ;D

Other than that, my old single shot Savage 110 looks mighty happy with the new Criterion Vartarg barrel and a freshly painted and bedded Woodchuck stock from Kevin Rayhill.... 8)

If I could only make some brass to load :o

Anneal it and run it through again.

For the initial forming to 20VT I use a non-bushing Redding full length sizer. A full length bushing style die will not size the bottom approx .030" of the neck. If you need or want to turn the necks, this can create an issue as you obviously want to turn the necks until you just "kiss" the shoulder. Fired cases I resize using a combination of a Redding body die and a Wilson neck sizer.

I think I've been working too much...

I pulled out the Pbike wildcat forming die I had purchased a year ago and proceeded to easily resize the neck to a workable diameter... Good tool for more than one forming purpose.

Thanks for the help,

MQ1

Full length resize the Fireball brass in a 20 VT die. Load a bullet and check the OD of the neck. Bushing choice from there. depending on the chamber neck size. Turn as/if needed. ;) Go shooting! 8)
