Another trip to the range, does this happen to you?

With a busy work schedule and helping raise my girlfriend's 5 year-old grandson I don't get to go to the range very often, lucky if it's once a month. But the last 3 times I went I had the same thing happen, though with different people every time.

Our small local range is owned by the Sheriff's Dept., open to the public but unmanned. So I'm at the range by myself when one, two or three other shooters show up with their new toys, AR-15's with several 30-round mags and a couple of 100 round boxes of Federal or Winchester .223 ammo. They put up a couple of targest then procede to load the mags and blast away as fast as they can. When all the ammo is gone one or the other pulls out a 1911 or Glock or such and they blast away 50 or 100 rounds with it, again almost as fast as they can load and shoot.

Now me, being a good mind-my-own-business type of person, I just sit back and watch the whole show. If they engage me in conversation I'll speak, but if not I just sit and watch. Then, when it's over the others pack up and leave. And after they're gone I hop up and pick up a pile of 1x fired .223 and 9mm, .40 or .45 brass to add to my stash.

The first couple of times I collected a couple hundred rounds of .223 and 50 or 100 rounds of .45, each time and the last time, which was last week, I picked up almost 400 rounds of .223 and 100 rounds of .45, 50 rounds of .40 and 100 rounds of 9mm.

I sure do love my fellow shooters who don't reload. ;D

We have our share of Rambo shooters at our club. I guess some "shooters" just like to make noise, but each to his own. I often smile inwardly wondering if they realize what they're doing to the life of their rifle barrels. However we need all the shooters we can get so I welcome their participation in whatever kind of shooting they like to do as long as it's safe and within range rules.

Two topics here.

One is range brass. That can be a good thing to many shooters.

Second is range courtesy. There are many "Ranger Ricks" coming to ranges. You can spot them in their camo shirts and pants with sandals and socks, traitor Jap car and AR-style rifle(s). Store-bought ammo comes out, no target, no rest, just noise and cases flying and hitting.

Back they go into that traitor Jap car, junk everywhere, people disturbed and then you check your target. Shot all to Heqq by the "Ranger Ricks" of the range.

Sadly...all to common.

There's a rumor going round here that a few Garret Troopers did such a thing at our range. Well some SLY old COOT happend to know where one lived and after policing up ALL the steel cased empties kindley returned (scattered) them to the front lawn of one individual. Wonder how the mowing went........... ;)

I see this sort of thing constantly at the local range where I do all my training. I'm there slung up shooting my T2K or Elisio and it never fails that before I finish a string of fire, someone has to call the range cold. I used to get annoyed at the constant interruptions and distracting rapid fire of the AR's and AK's, but have come to realize that it's good training for me, I'm now pretty good at re-assuming my position and being able to block this out and focus on what I'm doing.
I get amused at some of these people, and sometimes will just sit back and watch. It is a public range and they have just as much right to be there as I do. As long as they are safe, to each his own.
It also is common for someone to approach me and want to know what rifle I'm shooting. The T2K with iron sights looks pretty cool compared to the average bolt gun. I've heard: Is that a 50? (50 BMG) I'll explain a little about competition shooting, tell them when the next match is, even offer to provide a rifle and ammo if they want to try it. They seem interested but I havn't gotten anyone to try it yet. They don't know what they are missing.

We have a lot of this type of goofball in AZ. At least they put up targets. We have dirt shooters in AZ... they just like dumping ammo into the birm. ::)

Been doing that for years. I love range brass.

Oh, I've been picking up brass for years too, I have a couple of buckets full of assorted stuff that I don't use. But in the past it was more like, pick up a dozen 30-06 cases, six .243 cases, maybe ten .44 mag. cases, just small amounts like that. But these last three times I went I picked up more brass than I would in a whole year in the past. Gotta love those auto's.

My new nephew (by marriage) went to the range and policed a whole bunch of "bullets" for me to reload. When I looked in the bucket, it was all 22lr, steel, and aluminum cases. We've had some long discussions after that about reloading, what to grab, what NOT to grab, and why.

At least you know he wants to be in your good graces.

I belong to a public range with a rangemaster present at all times to call for a cease fire every 20 minutes to change targets. The last time I went I noticed quite a few 22 caliber holes in my last target even though I was shooting 7mm at the time. I thought about raising cain but I had such a fun shoot and was leaving anyway that I let it slide. That is the first time in probably 10 years somebody opened up on my target for whatever reason. Before I joined the club we shot at an informal range on forest service land and it was not uncommon for some jerk to blast away while you were setting out your target at 100 yards. More than once people emptied their AR's into my target so bad I could not see my holes while trying to sight in. I never question paying my yearly membership and daily use fee at the range just to get away from the many jerks who possess firearms. I don't think many of them hunt with single shot rifles like I do either. Tom

The very reason why I don't shoot at a "Range". One of "my" ranges is 24 sections of state land and the other is 36 sections of mixed BLM/state land.

I am the highpower director and range safty officer. I like to go to the range and shoot for a while, then these gun ho shooter arrive and I spend most of my time correcting gun safty. I don't mind the rappid fire shooting its the unsafe way they handle the weapons. Thanks Perk
