Another New .22lr Entry From Norma

From Shooting Sports USA:

"Norma introduced at SHOT Show 2023 what is perhaps the first truly new development in match grade .22 LR ammo, a patented 43-grain boat-tail bullet specifically intended for really extended ranges exceeding 300 yards.

Certainly, the first question that barges into any competitor’s mind is, “How on earth do you put a boat tail on a heel-base bullet?” Norma calls the configuration a “rocket tail.” Picture hollowing out the base of the bullet’s heel and raising the center of the hollow into a cone that reaches to the base of the bullet, and you’ve got the concept. Mike said the configuration results in a flatter and more stable bullet trajectory, even though starting velocity is slightly supersonic at about 1,165 f.p.s.

Norma XTREME LR-22

The first true innovation in .22 LR match-grade ammo, Norma’s XTREME LR-22 boasts an unusual “rocket tail” bullet.

While hollowing the base would lighten a bullet’s weight, Norma extended the nose of the bullet to bring the weight up to 43 grains, compared to a typical and traditional match bullet weight of 40 grains. The increased weight, of course, results in lesser sensitivity to crosswind. To put Mike’s opening 12-inch claim into perspective for centerfire competitors, he’s essentially keeping shots within the 10-ring of the NRA High Power MR-1 600-yard target. Said another way, shooting Norma’s XTREME LR-22 ammunition in his Vudoo, Mike would be posting High Master scores at 600 yards with a .22 LR rifle (at least, on a windless day, anyway)."

O.K. so a little bit of back story. First Norma Xtreme LR .22 and RWS R PLUS LONG RANGE are both manufactured by RWS in Furth Germany. The first announcement of this long distance .22 was at the 2022 Shot Show. Norma indicated that the product would be on the shelves shortly. So I started poking around and I could not find it anywhere, either in Norma or RWS. So I started aggravating the Norma Group in Savannah, GA., since they are the primary import group for RWS and Norma into the U.S. To my non-surprise I never was able to get a clear answer. I have also talked to several retailers. Some said that the new bullet is not performing well at all and that Baretta Holdings ordered removal of the new ammo. A contact I have in England said that they now have received some of this ammo, but very little to sell. Additionally, several retailers have pulled any references to the Long Range .22lr from their websites. I personally have given up on this bunch. I mean the least they could do is be honest about the situation.

Enough of my griping. Do any of you have any information concerning the RWS and Norma .22? Or is my stuff just rumor? Anyway, this had seemed to be the first technological innovation of the .22 in many years and it had my piqued curiosity.

This all reminds me of the early days of home computers. Every week
something new was claimed to be available, then "NADA". Do you all
remember the phrase "Vapor Ware" ??

I go back to the stone age where a boulder was your "hard drive". But you nailed it. All hype, smoke, and mirrors. Along with a sampling of Euro "attitude" toward the U.S.

This is all well and good, but Norma and RWS can't get their act together. First they have been touting this "new offering" for over 2 years! Neither of these offerings are on the retail shelves. That's both the U.S. and EU. What's even worse is that the Norma folks have no idea if or when this NEW .22LR will ever be available. And when you speak with them in Savannah Ga. at Norma Precision they act like they don't care about the customer. Beretta Holdings which owns both RWS and Norma did get rid of Norma Precision's COO - Paul Lemke. That's a good start although he was picked up by Legacy Sports. But now Beretta needs to jack-up their operations.
