‘Another’ Mosin Build

So while I’m waiting on stuff to soak in chemicals or dry and cure up for final sanding, etc on the Carcano Sporter, I decided to get a head start on my Mosin Sporter. It’s a Russian 91/30 stock that I had previously, and quite successfully, converted into an M44 stock for a stock-less rifle I bought. Put it together and took it to the range… Kablooey. I wish I still had the pics. Any way a little bit of glue and a bit of hammer work along with a Hungarian barreled action w/ complete bolt in good shape and we are ready to try again. I’ve had this gun years longer than the Carcano I’m working on. Anyway, my plan was to give this the exact same treatment as the Carcano…previously it had several coats of Rustoleum camouflage black paint…as did the Hungarian M44 action. But now I’ve changed my mind and wanted to go with stain like I did on the Carcano. Several painful hours later I got the grain clear enough to take a stain. Unfortunately it did not take as nicely as the Carcano’s wood did. It’s really blotchy. No matter though, I have a plan to try and salvage the stain job to a hopefully cool effect. If that don’t work out I’ll just paint it black again, lolfml. Planning on having the barreled action sand blasted.

Some of the Mosin parts came out of the MEK today. Magazine and bolt body and decocker are still in there. Missing the rest of the stuff. Trigger, trigger sear, screw, trigger pin, ejector, ejector spring screw… all missing. Also.. the only decocker I have is bubba’d… weight savings I’d assume, or someone just couldn’t leave well enough alone. So the cost of all the trigger and ejector parts is coming in at around $60 and a new decocker is about $15-$30. Plus shipping which is running around $20, all of this from Numrich. If I get a Timney trigger, which is readily available on eBay, thats $102 shipped. I get a legit safety so I can use the bubba’d decocker without loosing any real functionality since the Mosin os cock on open. I just have to make a trigger pin and find or buy a replacement screw and get the ejector parts which I can get a touch cheaper on eBay with free shipping. I’ll get a better trigger and a better safety for about the same, if not slightly more, money. Think I know which way I am going. I just have to wait for funds to become available.

If you use an alcohol-based stain, some call it wood dye, some call it leather dye, but its all the same thing you will not get the blotchy look you are talking about. Hardwoods won't absorb the usual wood stains, but the alcohol-based products will work fine.

Many that Bubba has not gotten to are still "projects" if you want them to shoot well.

My M-44 looked great being a '45 refurb, but shot patterns instead of groups. Took some trial and error to figure out how to make it shoot tight groups. Lined the entire barrel channel with adhesive cork strips on both the stock and the top hand guard which was a dramatic improvement. Got that idea from a video on YouTube.

Worked up some loads and now it shoots 1.5 MOA groups using Hornady #3120 pills.

Sure is fun to shoot now that it is accurate :)

this is a massaged 91/30 oem bbl like new condition
shortened to 24" threaded with a brake
reconfigured oem stock, sanded and stained
usgi m14 cheek pad stained
timney trigger
bipod
6-18x nikon
project was to disprove collector claim that 91/30's were 3 moa rifles and no BUBBA work could make it better
at 100 yards, 3 shot load development.

This was an alcohol based stain. Used the exact same stain, exact same tin, on the Carcano stock, which is also made of a hard wood, and that worked out wonderfully. This particular stock has been through a lot. I can’t speak as to why it ain’t taking the stain evenly. That said I did not care to treat it with a conditioner. But I did something, and I think it looks awesome!!!

Slapped a scope mount on the Mosin and am planning on installing this cheapie LER scope by AIM. Once I get it shooting the way I want I might invest in a better scope. Ohhh, and I got two coats of black on it. Got a coat of clear on the stock too. Like 40 more coats of clear and I’ll be ready to wet sand! Then I got to finish painting the bits and pieces, mill for a Timney trigger, buy the trigger, and get the extractor pieces I’m missing. One bit at a time.

Think you'll like the Timney trigger . Got it on two of mine . Re-worked one of them to get it down to around five - six ounces for my Open Rifle . Wouldn't try that for a field rifle though . Never know who might pick it up .

Did you have another screen name? I was just glancing through some of the Mosin posts and the target looked familiar...haha!

yes that was in another life...look at the date...2013.
i use to compete in mil surplus rifle match at 100/200 and 300/600 sniper matches. 30'06,8mm, 7,5x55 swiss, lots of various mn's russian, polish, finn..etc.

Looks good. I got a decent 91/30, shoots like a mosin. I need to probably bed it with cork strips, but I got too many projects…..

Timney triggers are great for these old guns. I got one for my Mauser sporter I’m working on. Gonna be a blast to shoot.

Try out some Acraglass when you can too. Stuff sets up really nice and the kit comes with dye to help blend with wood or metal.
