I have been getting a lot of questions lately on this new wildcat, so I though I would share it with you guys. Yet another 6mm for the AR platform.
John Holliger Of White Oak Precision and I have been in collaboration on this cartridge since about late May or early June 2011. We talked about a 6mm that is based on a 6.8 SPC case since there is certainly an abundance of brass from several different manufacturers and for other reasons like bolt strength, chamber wall thickness and feeding reliability in an AR which the cartridge is intended for use in. John already had the 6mm WOA which was very accurate but lacked the velocity of the more popular 6mm Hagar which was put on the map by Carl Bernosky, who is arguably the best shooter to ever compete in the sport. We talked about critical case dimensions such as body taper, shoulder angle, minimum neck length, and freebore to accommodate the 105/107 class of bullets.
Shortly after the project was in the works, my friend Rich, who is chiefly behind getting the the now famed 6mm Hagar brass into recent motion at Hornady, informed me of his efforts. My first though was: CRAP!, all this for nothing. Since the plans were already in the works, I went full speed ahead, and boy am I glad I did. I have now had a few months to test the cartridge with several different powder charges from different manufacturers as well as multiple bullet weights. Generally speaking, the velocities are; 2860 for the 105/107, 3000 for the 87 gr, and 3230 for the 70 gr. it will easily accept a 105 in a mag length load, but personally I would not use it across the course, perhaps it's a great solution for varmint hunters or ferrul hog hunters in TX. So far, I am tickled to death by the cartridge performance and reliability and this is the first time in several years when I have very anxious for the season to start again! Til then, merry Christmas and happy new year!
Please feel free to send a PM with any further interests.
