Another 6BR!

Just finished up a "bitsa" built 6BR the other day. I put a Shilen 8 twist barrel on a Savage small shank action, and slapped that into a B&C tactical Medalist stock. The scope is a 30mm Hawke 8-32x56 mildot. I only have about 25 rounds through it, and haven't shot any real groups yet, but I think she will be a shooter. I shot a couple ladders this evening at 350 and 700 yards and they were about 1 MOA groups... so gotta like that!! ;D I think I have zeroed in on a node so now I will see what she'll really do.

Tell us about the scope and how it functions with the 6MM.
Their website seems to indicate it is for airguns.

I think the scope (Sidewinder 30) is marketed for general rifle use but the review they have posted was conducted with an airgun. It is a decent scope for the $$. (on sale @ Eabco) In the same league as a Nightforce or Leupold? Nope. Better than most other budget scopes? I think so. I have 3 other Hawke scopes, all Frontier (Japanese) models, which unfortunately have been discontinued. I think that model was the best kept secret in scopes. So I tried this one instead. The glass is pretty good, but clarity starts to suffer a bit at long range and power above about 28x. The side focus is also a bit fiddly at long range. Eye relief and exit pupil size is good, the scope tracks well except when you have the elevation nearly maxed out, then there is some interplay between windage and elevation. The turrets work very well, 15MOA in 1 revolution for elevation, same for windage. I only shoot to about 750 yards max so it works fine for me with a 0 MOA rail. For 1000 yards I would fit a 10MOA rail. It comes in a really nice fitted hard case, with a large metal fast-focus wheel and flip up covers. I'm happy with it, but I wish it was a Frontier. ;D

What taper is your Shilen barrel...especially the muzzle diameter?

STP: Looks like a Savage Varmint taper to me, about .80" at the muzzle. I could be wrong though.

I haven't measured it but it was called the "varmint" taper, purchased via Midway. Seems to be a nice barrel. Good threads, throated for the 105-ish stuff, a hint of copper after the 1st 5 rounds but really nothing since. I put a few more rounds down the pipe this afternoon just to see if it would like 107SMK's. It does.
