Another 6br barrel length question

My bad shoulder does not like the 308 anymore, so tomorrow I am dropping off my Rem 700 to have the milspec 5R changed to a Broughten 5C. The new barrel will be a 1-8 twist, palma contour chambered in of course 6mm br. I will shoot target and varmints most likely no farther than 600 yards, and would like to maintain the original feel of the rifle.

I am new to this cartridge, will I be okay with a 24" barrel shooting 105 grain bullets, or should I go a couple inches more? Any idea what kind of velocity I can expect out of a 24" tube?

My first post on this forum, TIA for any help. ;D

Do you want to sell the 5r barrel.I am trying to build a cheapy for my daughter who outshoots me with my own .308.

I'm running 2940 from a 26 inch bbl. with Berger 105 VLD's. Load is moderate.
I would guess 24 inches would put you at 2900 or below depending on how hard you push them.

I agree. I have a 24", and low 2900's is on the top node for me with the right powder, with 105-107's.
But I think that is plenty steam for 600 and below. The node below that is more accurate for me.

I'm getting about 2830 for the 105 VLDs out of my 24" Kreiger with Varget. RL-15 might get me a bit more velocity, but I haven't tried it yet.

We have seen up to 130 fps variation between barrels shooting the same exact 6mmBR load (bullet, primer, powder charge). Some guys with a 26" barrel can get 2900+ fps with 105s while others have trouble pushing it much past 2840 fps. If you have an inherently slow barrel, it's best to find a lower node that shoots well. Reloder 15 usually does give a little more velocity than Varget.

That's moving pretty good. I have a 28" Broughton 8twist, and if I push the 105's at 2940 ~ 2950, I start to get hard extraction during a 10-shot string. It is accurate though!

I ended up backing the load off a bit, and adjusted my seating depth to get a combination that works well for slinging 17 rounds down range in 5 minutes. The load is accurate, and has minimal vertical at 1000yds.

Have you ever tried rippin' 10 shots down range as fast as you can, and seeing if you start to get stiff bolt lift?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think that I will go with the finished length at 26", and if I don't like it I can always cut it down, and re crown it. 2,900 fps. would be fantastic, with a 105 gr. bullet my 28" 243 win is only giving me 150 fps. more, and that takes over 10 more grains of powder to get. I think that I am going to like this 6br.

The barreled action should be ready for me in a few weeks, and when I got home there was a box of Lapua brass and bullets waiting for me on my porch. ;D
