Another 22 Creedmoor question

I’m planning to build a 22 Creedmoor on a 700 action. I’ve ordered a 1-7” varmint barrel. Initially thinking of heavy weight bullets, 80-90 grain. I have about 500 Hornady 60gr 22cal spire point bullets. The only other 22 caliber I have is a 222 with 1-14” twist.
I’ll be using the Creedmoor for Coyotes & other varmints. Realistically 300 yards or less.
Should I consider changing the twist to something that would accommodate the 60 grain bullets? What would you recommend?

With bullet RPM being somewhere in the 390,000 range it's likely the bullets would fly apart shortly after they left the barrel so a 7tw would be a bad idea for nearly any bullet capable of being launched at 22CM speeds.

If you want to shoot heavy for caliber bullets obviously you need a fast twist barrel but when that fast twist barrel is chambered in something that's capable of the velocities the likes of a 22CM is with light bullets it can be a recipe for disaster unless you throttle them wayyy down and who builds a 22CM to shoot 223 velocities. You can get away with shooting 60's in a 7tw 223 but not a 22CM so you need to decide if you want to shoot the heavies or the middle weight bullets then select a barrel with the appropriate twist rate.

If you want to shoot those 60's all you'd need is a 12tw but then you won't be able to shoot the heavies. Even an 8tw is going to put them around 350,000 RPM and if you went with a 9tw that may not be enough to stabilize the heavies so you need to decide which bullets you'd rather shoot then build around those.

Look at doing a 22xc. Better barrel life and 6xc brass is arround. Just neck it down. But if you stick with the 22 creed you will need to come above 75gr or higher with that twist.

I haven’t got to it yet but I have the 90vld’s shooting excellent with 1-7 and will only use for longer ranges and was thinking of a smaller hammer bullet for closer shots in hopes tha smaller body won’t allow for too much expansion but will see. Facing same issue putting together a 6 creed with 7.5 twist. Also heard some of the Hornady bullets enter but no exit but not sure if will hold together. Both 26” barrels, carbon 6 and criterion

AS already said, that fast of twist will play havoc with lighter bullets at speed. Those long heavy bullets will do a number on the throat quickly, unless you stay on top of it with something like JB. As the throat gets rougher, it will start to damage the lighter bullet jackets an you will wonder why you can't hit anything. Also those long heavy bullets are target bullets, not designed to expand, they will just pass through an animal. If you drop the twist back to a 9, you can easily shoot lighter bullets all the way up to around 70 grains depending on it's length. Usually BTHP's will work but not the longer plastic tipped bullets. Out to 300, your not gaining much if any thing shooting the super heavy for caliber bullets or even the higher BC lighter weight bullets. Also the heavy bullets will need a much longer throat cut to keep the back end out of the case reducing the power capacity. This will require a lot of jump with lighter bullets. Sure some folks have done what your thinking of doing, but super short barrel life and vaporized bullets doesn't sound like a good recipe to me.

yep let me tell you about 17 PPC shooting Berger 37 grain VLD's from a 7 twist barrel at nearly 400,000 RPM

I have a 22BR with a 7 twist barrel and have shot the Hornady 53grn V-Max bullets very accurately. I also shoot the old 75grn A-Max bullets as well.

22 CM is great coyote medicine. My only change would be shooting that in a 9 twist barrel rather than a 7. You'll be able to shoot 40-75 grain bullets very well with no bullet failure. 300 yards won't require heavy 80-90 grain bullets with the CM. Then if you wanted to stretch that range to 1000, the 75 grain bullets would shine at the longer ranges. 200 yd zero roughly .75 high at 100. 1.5 low at 300. 20 minutes at 1000 yards. Very impressive.

Sleddog, seriously consider the freebore you want to use. Freebore for heavies does not work the best with lighter bullets.

60g V max are available now from vendors, keep that in mind. The 60g soft points make great deer bullets, also.

Urbanrifleman maybe able to fix you up with the 8T.
