Another 1,000 yard range in Texas?

Does anyone know why Texas does not have a state owned and operated shooting center like the Ben Avery?

We have the TSRA, why don't they lobby the legislature for something like that? If the Arizona shooters got it done, why can't we? It isn't because we don't have the public park land.

Joe, there are good aspects of "State Ownership" and things that are not so good. It is FAR better with a private club. But the expense of delivering up a great range would take LOTS of members and a lot of up-front money. That may be easier to obtain than finding a sympathetic ear in State government to fund and then manage such an undertaking. It is the "management" part that is the undesirable portion of having a "public" range.. I have seen both sides of the equation. I like private much better.

I have been using Ben Avery for 37 years and through that period ranges were leased to private operators and finally AZGF took control back of all ranges. AZGF has spent a lot of money over the last few years and made some great improvements to a world class facility. There are good and bad on each side but to recreate Ben Avery would be out of reach for private funds much less fund the fight with the neighbors to build it today. Ask Matt about the sound studies that had to be done to silence the development in the east side of I17.

I doubt most states are interested in being in the shooting range business. Significant potential liability, low number of resident shooters and very small revenue coupled with high employee cost.
