annealing

Has anyone noticed a difference in group size between cases that were annealed and those that weren't? My neighbor says he anneals his cases everytime he reloads and wouldn't do it any other way. He does it to have the same neck tension. I am always trying to get the one hole five shot group so .......
Talk to me.

I've read a lot of positive feedback about this - and neck tension has been the defining reason for annealing after every firing . . . these folks are annealing for accuracy - not for extended case life. ,which is not to say case life would be reduced - quite the opposite I bet).

It all boils down to everything being the same each and every time, just like full length sizing over neck sizing each time......
If you FL each time with a fitted die it will always be the same, when you neck size it works till you need to bump the case, and there goes the same thing all the time out the window..

Eliminating variables is what it is all about.

I found it interesting that no one answered my question:) The reason for annealing is to allow the necks to have the same tension from the reading I have done. Does anyone have any definitive information as to whether it is worth doing the work of annealing. Does anyone have any "before/after" in their records?

I have only my own annicdotal evidence that my F-Class results are better - higher scores - when I anneal my 7WSM brass every second firing then when I didn't.

If you read between the lines you'll see that annealing the case necks will deliver better accuracy than not doing them... we are talking, are you listening :D

Preacher, I have been itching for one of Ken Light's annealing machines for some time and for the money it costs I was hoping I could justify the purchase by more than just reading between the lines. I know you know what I mean. I need something that definitely kicks me over the edge. Yes, I was listening but I wasn't hearing what I wanted to hear:) If nothing else, somebody lie to me. No, really I was expecting benchrest shooters to have numbers, before and after, to help me justify my decision. I am getting more anal as I get older and that is why I am looking at getting the annealer.

David:

"In over 60 years in the Bench Rest game I have discovered that the ultimate in rifle accuracy is the culmination of tremendous trifles" As told to me by Ferris Pindell in 2002.

Organize an accuracy shooting system and accuracy plan. Start with top shelf gear that is worthy of each and every one of your finely crafted rounds. Treat the prep of each round like that is the one that will find a center X for you on your last shot at Camp Perry or some other Championship. Don't leave ANY points in the loading room as they are free for your efforts and dedication.

You never have to look back when you execute your accuracy plan. You just march on and make it even better the next match.

I don't shoot competition, just lots of targets and some Pdogs. I feel that my groups on the targets are consistently smaller because of the annealing. Some good points for: It is very rare for me to have a split case neck. Necks are easier to turn with the K&M tool. Bullet seating is very consist ant when seating bullets in the cases. The comparator length of loaded rounds in annealed cases is always more consist than unannealed ones.,I can see this with the comparator even after one firing)I now anneal after every firing. And the SD,standard deviation) for a 10 shot string will be between 03 and 09.All this really helps when shooting at pdogs out to 700+yds.

I bought my Ken Lite,KL) annealing machine two years ago and I would feel lost without it today. One of my shooting buddies was so impressed with my KL that he bought one also. However he has had some trouble mastering it. I think it is the Cadillac of annealers. I enjoy watching the case necks one after the other reach that dull red glow,in dim light)at the same place and then fade out. You know that they are all the same now.

Hope this helps. Pdog2225

i just started annealing with the hornady tool,my question is what color should the brass be when done? also when the tempilaq starts to turn to a liquid do you dump it in the water or wait til it all turns to dump it?............jim

I usually anneal by dipping cases into a lead pot slightly below the shoulder and dump them into a pan of water. You will know when it is time to let them go.

I used to read about this method quite often. Do you guys consider the Ken Light annealer to be that much more superior?

Jim, I am using the Hornady system also. When annealing Rem 6BR brass I can see a blue ring start to show just below the shoulder and normally that is between 5 & 6 seconds. On Lapua and Norma brass I cannot see the ring so I just keep it in the flame for 6 seconds. I used the tempalaq sent with the kit on a throw away case and timed how long it took to melt and that's how I came up with the 5 to 6 seconds. Secondly, you don't need to dump the cases into water. Just let them fall into a small cardboard box. They are ready to handle after about 10 minutes after doing the last one.

hedditch,

If you shoot over a chronograph you will see the reasons to anneal right away. Much lower ES abd SD result in decreasing verticle stringing, one less this to worry about.

David,
My case necks are turned to .012 and they are very shinny from krazy cloth.the color is like a straw color, not a blue haze like new Lapua. also the water turns pink when i dump them in............jim

One advice : go and get it. After a little getting used to as how to use and set it up you will never look back
