Annealing Question

I am using tempilaq 750
Now when I anneal do I want it to evaporate just off my neck or neck and shoulder junction or just slightly past shoulder into the body?
Also is it normal for the inside to of the beck to be a bit "fuzzy" and "rough" after annealing?

I always calibrate my machine with Tempilaq 750 by painting it on the INSIDE of a clean neck and shining a strong light into the neck to watch when the paint turns from green to colorless; i.e. it "melts" it doesn't really evaporate. If you expose it to the flame, it will burn.

Likewise, if you anneal dirty brass, you can expect whatever you have stuck to the case to burn; lube for example. I always wet SS tumble before I anneal.

What cartridge are you working with?

What are you using as a heat source?

Reason I ask is there are differences in where you want to effect 'annealing' (stress-reducing might be more appropriate term; annealing - when achieved - takes things too far) so just where you want to see your indicator change color will vary.

If your neck interior is fuzzy / rough I suspect your cases aren't thoroughly free of residue & it's that turning to ash that you're seeing.

Tempilaq shouldn't 'evaporate' when used correctly, it just changes color. If you're seeing it melt off you're heating your cases too far.

Some folks advocate using Tempilaq on neck insides where it's not directly in the 'line of fire'. Harder to observe but more reliable.

308 win. Induction annealing machine. Yeah I annealed these ones before cleaning them. It doesnt "Evaporate" but it does turn from puke blue to a very dark color.
