and finally... powder toward the fast end for short bearing surface bullets?

equal weight bullets, one with shorter bearing surface: would that bullet tend to prefer a powder on the faster end of the loading spectrum?
 
No.
Just like barrel length, the slower powder will always produce the higher velocity at LOWER pressure.

thanks. in my effort to be brief, i may have not been concise. by 'prefer' i really meant ease of tuning, width of node, consistent velocity and the like. in other words, across the span of suitable powders, should i investigate the faster ones first?
