AMP. Annealer

Thinking of pulling the trigger on this Annealer. It's a heck of a lot of money so I I'm looking for an honest opinion from someone who has one. Does it really warrant that much of an investment. Thanks in advance.

Just got back from the range. Popped out the the primers and broke out the AMP. Put it on a tray table in my living room in front of the TV and did 50 rounds sitting in "MY" chair in the AC in no time at all. It is the best piece of equip. i have around here. Sold the Bench Source to get it when they came out. I use it every time i prep brass and couldn't be happier........

I like mine better than the gas annealer I was using. The setup for different cases is much easier and I don't have to be concerned about fluctuating gas pressure and aiming the flame. I won't claim that it is 'better' than other annealers, just preferred by me for those reasons.

I use mine in every reloading cycle. Its quick, simple and
efficient. I can be through the process on a small amount of cases, before I would be able to get the torches regulated
on a gas setup. LDS

The most important part, in my opinion, is the consistency. I can anneal 10 pieces of brass today and 20 next week and feel they will both be the same anneal. I didn't have that have faith it was with the torch annealer...so it forced me to batch my brass.

Have a question and am not intending to hijack this thread (will start a new thread if necessary). I use a Bench Source to anneal and am very happy with it and prefer to anneal after every firing. I normally shoot two BR matches each year that require 280+ rounds fired each (NBRSA 600/1000 yd Nats and NBRSA 600/1000 yd NW Regional). I find it impractical to load up for the entire match since I will usually tweak a load and will reload in the hotel room in the evening. During these matches I don't anneal when reloading but would prefer to.

I don't want to bring the BS into a hotel room and run it with the open flames. If I switched to an AMP do you believe it would be well suited for annealing in a hotel room? Is there enough smoke to be noticed in the hall way or to set off a smoke detector?

Thanks for the help and good shooting.

Hi Richard... Regina here.

We meet last year at the nationals. I'm hoping to shoot at the regional this year, at White City (recovering from a broken ankle), so no range time. Hopefully I'll be up to snuff by then.

I built an induction annealer and I'll be glad to let you use it while your here. Just click on the following link

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/induction-brass-annealer-redux.3908353/

In the first few pages of the thread there is a video showing it in use, doing 6mm dasher cases. There is some smoke from un-burned powder residue. I think in the AMP video there is also some smoke for the same reason.

Hope to see you in Sept.

Regina

Thanks. I'll be there in Sept. Hope you heal well and are back to 100% soon. See you in a few months.

Rich

I got one. Now I anneal every time. Annealing is now the easiest part of reloading instead of the most PITA part.

Rich,

I've used mine for about three months now, annealing Lapua 6br, and don't see any reason to shy away from its use in a hotel room. I rarely see any smoke...but when I do, it's a very faint wisp.

Rich I went up to my buddies and did my cases to see how they worked. I saw no smoke. Now these were Dasher cases. We brushed the inside of necks with a bronze brush in a drill prior to annealing. It was quick and easy. The only downside I saw was I am used to seeing the color change down the case from the flame. It doesn't seem to show this as much. Matt

I have taken my AMP to other peoples houses to show them how well/easy it works many times. I wouldn't hesitate to take it into your hotel room to use. I have yet to see mine make smoke (just clean the brass prior to annealing).

To the OP,

The AMP is one of my favorite pieces of shooting equipment, to the point I have been annealing brass for my shooting partner because it is FUN. Yeah, I said it, fun.

I really like how fast I can anneal.
Sometimes I'm going so fast I miss hitting the "start" button and the case isn't annealed.
Usually you can tell by color if that occurs

I few things that you shouldn't do...
  1. Don't put the hot cases immediately in a curved bowl as the necks might get a bit out of round lay them gently down.
  2. Don't use your trigger finger and touch the case to see if it is still hot.
I'm not saying I have done either of these ;), just good ideas..

I agree with all the praise the AMP gets. I do believe it is the most accurate and stable annealer on the market. I have read their patent out of curiosity ( I'm a EE) and I understand how their features are developed.
BUT, I am a little frugal and started to develop my own inductive annealer and collected a bunch of parts and Royer oscillator boards and gave up as playing with electronics isn't as much fun as it was when I was younger! I noticed the Annie and got to know its developer. So, I bought one. If it is used correctly, it is every bit as accurate and consistent as the AMP and maybe even a bit faster. Only real difference is you have to develop your own time table for each of your cases you anneal. Once the caliberation is done you are gold!

A real bonus of the Annie is its size, it is a midget compared to the AMP, especially if you use an air cooled work coil. I use both the air cooled and the water cooled work coils. The compact size makes it VERY portable. Also, it is slightly less than half the AMP size. Once the factory cleared up their start-up problems, it is also reliable.
