Ammunition/powder storage?

Ive got a case of centerx rimfire ammo and some powders to store and was thinking for now a small wooden cabinet with something like a one of those rechargeable dehumidifiers like the one remington sells? The room it will be in is heated i the winter and ac in the summer and generally runs from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius .

Would this be sufficient ?

Wood box is all you need fancy or not. I have powders I bought in the 60,s still use them today 4831 4320 4198 rl15 etc. Just my two cents Tommy Mc

A dehumidifier is inexpensive insurance. Is your cabinet too far from an electric outlet to just put in an electric dehumidifier? How long are you storing these items? On the other side of the discussion there is thought you may not need one at all. So, it boils down to do you need one or will you sleep better knowing you have that base covered.

When storing ammo, heat is your enemy. I can remember going into the Magazines in the desert. It would be 110 outside and 69 inside the mags. Why not just store it in the house?

I store ammo and powder in two separate refrigerators that I got from an appliance company that takes away old ones when they sell new ones. Door latches are modified so they will pop open easily if there is a build up of pressure and they are set to have the temperator pretty much constant in the mid 50s. (I also keep what photographic film I still use in there too.

Heat is your enemy on match 22 bullets because of the lube. And it wont last forever anyway so dont plan on setting records with 10yr old rimfire match ammo. Itll be squirrel plinking material after a few years

Im thinking 3yrs max on the rimfire ammo as it might take me that long to use it all.

Ive never thought of using an old fridge? Whats the humidity like in a fridge?

I keep desicent in the two fridges so the humidity stays low. Recharge it in the oven. At mid-50s not a problem though.

I was using old refrigerators and freezers as mentioned above until one of the local grocery stores replaced their older glass front refrigerators with new ones. I asked the store manager if I could buy a couple but he said they would have to be ‘decomissioned’ before he could release them. So for the effort of removing the compressors and Freon pipes from the old refrigerators, I hauled off 3 in perfect condition. I use one for a rust blue cabinet and the other two for powder, prime storage. The glass doors are an excellent way to see what you have without having to open the door all the time.

My suggestion is to post this question on Rimfire Accuracy. The shelf life will likely be related to the condition of lube.
