Ammo oal question for Barrett M82a1

I recently acquired a M82a1 Barrett semi-auto. I am considering hand loading for it. I understand they are not "accuracy rifles" but I would think I should be able to make better than military ball. I want mag length capable bullets and do not want to to buy 5 different boxes of bullets to check the throat length if someone can answer my question.

My question is this..."What bullets have you guys that shoot this rifle find the most accurate for paper and steel plates?"
Looking at Cutting Edge and Barnes
Or should I not expect much more and just shoot the Hornady Amax loaded ammo?

I would just shoot A-max and leave it at that.

the problem with the 82 is that its a Long recoil gun, and it just isn't going to be able to take advantage of a better bullet. when I was running 50cal matches back in the day, (FCSA, 2001-2006) the most accurate 82 that I saw in competition posted a 6 target agg that was 11". that is: 6 targets, 5rds each, at 1000y. the 6 target agg was 11.43" if memory serves. keep in mind this was world record territory for a 82a1. most of the time, 82's would print 18" to 24" for a 6 target agg.

the A-max is a good bullet. I saw more than a few records drop with it out of a full custom bench gun. its a good choice for the money.

I echo what @rmr has said, I don't have a lot of experience with the Barrett 82 but IMO the 750 gr. Hornady A-max is one of the most forgiving bullets in the 50 BMG. - Sorted BTO, weighed & checks to diameter can even improve results. - I still shoot them as a preferred bullet in two of my 50's.

Good luck & good shooting - Ron -
