I was offered. ~125 pieces of Lapua 308 brass yesterday which I accepted. The price was right but no history. On inspection I found all had been fired, with most showing extremely clean primer pockets. Some still had spent primers. Visual inspection showed no line development at the base. A few showed obvious signs of neck turning. No indication of recent annealing. No split necks.
Tumbled in lizard litter for several hours then resized to 1.620-1.622” to match my rifle. Easily resized with One Shot lube. Neck thickness 0.015” on all necks checked including those turned. Primer pockets were ~0.206” dia. and all inspected were 0.130” deep. My guess they were uniformed. My new Lapua is 0.125”. Paper clip test inspection did not indicate any issue. After resizing OALs were 2.003 to 2.007” on all rounds checked. A sampling of weights ranged from 171.1 to 173.2 grains. Different Lots?
My typical load is IMR 4064 with 168 SMK which is a 600yd round. I don’t see any reason to not use this brass. The only additional test I can think to perform is sectioning the case to check for thinning at the base but I see no reason based one the above inspections. May do one anyway.
Any thoughts would be appreciated?
