Alvin York/Gary Cooper movie

Ft. Lewis. We shot at silhouette targets from 50 yards to 350 yards, I believe. M14's. We also shot a half course with the new M16. Same targets, as I recall. We were not allowed to shoot offhand. I had to pass on a couple of 50 yard targets because I lost sight of them when I knelt down. Shot expert anyway. I loved the days at the range, just because I was good at it.
Dad might have told me what the course was in WWII, but I don't recall.
There was a chapter, in Ned Roberts' book, "The muzzleloading Caplock Rifle", on a blackpowder match attended by Alvin York. Title, "Beef Shoot at Jimtown". By the way, that's a great reference book. As for the movie, I liked that too. WH

I was in the first group to be issued the M-16 in basic. At Ft. Jackson
we shot familiarization at 25 meters, and had to shoot groups that the
D.I. could cover with a quarter. Once you passed, it was a ride in a cattle
carrier over to the 100 meter range where it was all brown, plastic, fall
downs set at two heights. Chest to head, and shoulder to head. Once you
passed there, you went to the 300 meter range on the same type of plastic
fall downs. A lot of the targets were so shot up. quite a few of us could not
pass on the first day. 300 meters was the furthest, and we fired on no paper
targets at all.

I don’t watch movies for the “facts”. The ones I like have a message, usually about good values conquering evil ways. The good guys get the girl and they live happily ever after.
Who watches a Star Wars movie and grumbles about how they don’t have spaceships that travel at warp speed? Reality is over rated.
I’d like them to try to do Mr Smith goes to Washington set in modern times. o_O
Well I get your point for sure. But, real life is about facts and if a movie is going to be about a real life event it should strive to be as factual as possible, jmo.

I was in the first basic training company to be issued M16 at Fort Gordon, October 1968.
