Alternate to Berger 105gr hybrid target bullets in 6BR 1:8 twist barrel?

Hi

Pm me, we can get ya taken care of on the vttacs, they are on the shelf and ready for immediate delivery, the only bullets that have the long wait times are our handpulled stuff.

Hope this helps
TomE

I need to try some of those things. I heard they really shoot great. Must be the dies. :)

The Berger 6 mm 108 target is available at certain times I just bought 500 , tried them, than bought 1000, another 1000... and my dasher barrel likes them best, slightly better than the few 105s I have. So I don't miss them. The 107 SMK is good, 108 eldm okay, like the 110 SMK too in the dasher.

Thank you for the online and offline suggestions and information. I was able to find 500 Berger 108gr target bullets in stock to work up. If these give me decent performance, I should have enough Berger 108’s, 105 VLD’s, and remaining hybrid 105’s on hand to get me through most of Spring. I’ll post the Berger 108gr data here when I get it.

I appreciate the other suggestions. My searches didn’t find enough Sierra 107 SMK’s or Scenar 105’s to be able to work up a load and shoot 3 or 4 matches with the same lot of bullets on hand after the investment of time. With my need for bullet numbers and cost/availability considerations, V-TAC 103’s do not appear to be a viable option.

Correction: Based on TomE response that follows V-TAC 103's are an option I can and will pursue.

Sierra 107, great bullet. Accurate, reliable, good value.
Agreed, they are very good in my 6 dasher, 243, and 6 br

I tried some 107 Sierra Match Kings this summer and found out my barrel liked those even better than the Hybrids and the VLD's i was shooting. Which where dam good already. Of course the old BR will pretty much swallow anything you feed it.

Hornady 108 ELDM. I even have them in stock.

I was told the V-TAC is actually made by Hornady.
I'm curious if this is so about Hornaday and the v tac. A message or call to Tom would clear it up. I believe this is my next 6mm barrel bullet for recreational shooting.

So if the Vtac is made by Hornady, why would they be better than Hornady?

why would it matter who is producing the v tacs as long as they shoot well.

Because I would like to know! I shoot more Hornaday bullets than anything else.

Don't know if they are made at Hornady. But I did find this response:

V-Tacs
It appears there is some confusion about a new bullet that we are selling currently. We are very fortunate and have an extremely high demand for our hand made 103 6mm bullets. As many of you know we go to painstaking efforts to produce the most consistent and highest quality bullet that we can. Probably the most difficult to obtain ingredients in the process of making consistent bullets is time. Ask any custom bullet maker and you'll get the same answer.

Due to the long delivery time on our hand made 103 6mm we entered into negotiations to have a 6mm bullet produced for us via a larger and automated press. We call this line of bullets V-Tac. Please do not confuse our V-Tac bullet with our hand made bullets, produced at my shop here in Missouri. It was because of our long delivery times we considered help in making this V-Tac line. We deliberated long and hard before relinquishing control of a portion of the bullet making process to anyone else. We delivered to them a set of specifications and list of components that they met. We had custom, one of a kind, dies built for us. This line of bullets is proprietary to Vapor Trail Bullets exclusively.

Like all Custom Bullet makers, we feel our hand made bullets are still the pinnacle of bullets, this V-Tac line is available now and shooting amazingly well.
Thanks to all of our customers, hope this helps clear things up.

There have been shortages of Berger 6mm 105gr hybrid target bullets which I shoot in my slung 6BR match rifle with a 1:8 twist barrel. I am looking for alternate bullets that will give me comparable accuracy at 600 yards.
So far, I have tested Berger 105gr VLD target bullets and Hornady 108gr ELD-Match bullets. Load and performance data are below, and the VLD’s appear to offer the closest comparable performance.

Are there other bullets that I should consider for a 1:8 twist 6BR barrel shot at 600 yards?

Thank you in advance for suggestions and comments.

I personally find the 105g VLD to be slightly more accurate at 600 yards than the 105g Hybrid targets.

I’ve completed evaluations on many of the bullets suggested in this thread, and data are summarized in the following tables.

The following bullets provided 600 yard performance comparable to or better than that of Berger 105 grain hybrid target bullets in my rifle:
Berger 105 gr VLD Target
Berger 108 gr BT Target
Sierra 107 gr MatchKing
Lapua 105 gr Scenar L

Berger 108 gr BT Target bullets provided the best 600 yard performance in my rifle. Groups were significantly smaller (p < 0.01) than those produced by Hornady 108 gr ELD-M and Vapor Trail 103 gr V-TAC bullets.

I summarized methods used on a website.

My rifles have shot Bison Ballistics 103 gr Claymores just slightly better than Berger 105 Hybrids, but they are also scarce as hens teeth.

If youre not shooting a custom bullet then the vapor trail vtacs are hard to beat. They are the best machine made bullet ive ever used. Sierra 107mk comes next then bergers. Good thing about the vtacs is they are available now. Doesnt matter who makes them they are made to tom’s specs with his dies. Give em a try, i bet youll love them too

I'll second the Sierra 107s. They shoot small in my BR. not so much in my BRA.
Just did some testing today and the 105vlds did better than the hybrids in the BRA. Now I just have to find enough vlds for the season.
