alliant powder temp sensitivity

Sorry if this has been worn out before. I could not find any threads on it.

how temperature sensitive are the alliant powders relative to the hodgdon extreme ones.

are their new ones, the power pro ones, more or less temp sensitive than the Reloder series?

thanks

RL-15 is "pretty" temp INSENSITIVE.. Maybe not to the degree of Varget BUT it is pretty stable. There are a few NEW Reloader powders and they may be temp-stable, however, MOST of the Reloader line is not tolerant of temperature swings whatsoever... I have heard that they are working on a few powders that will be VERY stable at all temps. That would be nice...

I shoot Power Pro 2000MR in my FTR rig. I've done alot of testing with it, best I can tell is that for every 1 degree temp drop you loose about .50 to .75 ftps. Its not as stable as Varget but useable. The reason I shoot it is because it was the first powder I tried when the rifle was built and it shot so well I just stuck with it. The burn rate is between varget and 4350. As for RL15 and 17, Ive never tried em but lots of guys have good luck with em. I've talked to a few guys shooting AR Comp and love it and supposedly its just as stable as Varget. I actually talked to Alliant and they highly recommended AR Comp as a powder for the 308 with pretty much all bullet weights for match shooting.

Call alliant and ask them about the powder properties, they should be able to answer your question better than anyone.

I would like to hear what people's experience is who have tried the different powders.

I shoot RL-15 and Varget in my 6mmBR... I AM speaking from experience. In my hunting rifles, I have used ALL of the RL powders except the new RL-33... They ARE VERY temp sensitive..

I do well with RL-15 in a Dasher and with the 105 the same load to 90 degrees and i drop a tenth above. I don't see the big deal with it at all. Maybe if you leave them in the sun or let them cook in a hot chamber but that is your problem not the powders...... jim

Where are you going to be shooting?

I used RL-25 under Berger 180s in my 7WSM in Houston, TX to great effect, but had to abandon it when I moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago. I strongly prefer shooting a single load year-round, and the summer temps proved too much for it. I now use H4831SC and H1000 (I had tried both in Houston, but liked the RL-25 results better). Both work fine in the desert.

I shoot in Wisconsin.

I do not competitively shoot, but would like to find a load that will work good for varmint and coyote control year round where will not need to adjust for the season.

+1 . Rl-15 is the worst of the bunch in my experience with my Dasher. :o

I guess I'm lucky. I live in an area where "Winter" means low 40's and "Summer" is usually 70. A really HOT summer might get to 80 for a day or two.

Not much need for Temp Insensitive powder here. 8)

I use rl-22 in my .300wm and it gets 120 here in the summer and 20 below in the winter, I shoot a hot load of 70.0 grains of rl-22 behind a 210 vld I shoot it year around with no issues, shot a coyote not long ago at 887 yards with it. I also use a stiff load of rl-22 in my 6*284 and compete with it at 1000 yards, I start in march and end in August and never adjust my load,...no issues, my son shoots a stiff load of rl-19 in his 257 roberts improved year around,...no issues! I have shot dirty filthy rl-15 in my 6br-6brx- and in my 6 dasher all with stiff loads and never a issue, if it gets really hot in the August shoot I back off a half grain so I don't have issues but I do that with Varget and H-4895 also so again no issues with Alliant powders,..also stiff charges of 2400 in my 44 mag,...no issues there either.

I live in SW wisconsin. I shoot at least 3 x weekly year round. I use RL 22 in both my 338 LM and both RL 22 and 25 in my 243 AI. RL 19 in my 25-284. RL 22 in both my 6.5x 284s. RL 15 in my Surgeon 223 AI, and RL 15 in both Yankee Hill 223 auto's. Temps vary from below zero in winter to 102 degrees in summer. I load develop year round despite weather conditions. I shoot from 100 yards to 1000 yards with the same load developed despite the time of year. No pressure problems to date. Accuracy of most of my rifles are 1/4 to 1/5 moa 5 shot 100 yard groups. This holds true out to 1000 yards depending on wind conditions. The only powder I have personally had issue with in IMR 4064 and my 25-06, which was developed in winter wi where it shoots great. But take to SD prairie doggn and the bullets make it about 30 - 50 yards before blowing up. No problems with primer failure or bolt issues, just bullets won't hold together (VMAX 75grs). I also shoot a lot of H1000, 4831SC, H110 from Hodgkin. Vith powders N133 and N350 also show no issues with temperature. Good luck. Scott
