Air Force Talon SS

I have a G-daughter that is very interested is what I do, :D
from gutting/skinning any critter I am working with, reloading ammo etc.

I do believe that she will a hunter also, just like my 2 kids,
so I want to start her off on the right foot.
I have made it a task to find the best air rifle (within reason) for her to start off with,
and I can also use around the place for pest and varmints/ small game hunting etc.

I have spent some time looking and reading most info available, on air rifles etc.
I think I have narrowed the choice down to this option,

Air Force Brand Talon SS model, see info here,
https://www.airforceairguns.com/Articles.asp?ID=151

Caliber will 22 and have a scope sight, I can't believe all the options for this air rifle,
and the amount of shots per refill, accuracy etc.

Any member have one? Your thoughts, suggestions etc.

I know I have posted in the Small cal CF section, seeing that we don't have a Air Rifle section etc, but it is 22 caliber.

And to go along with the above post,
Are there any good sites dealing with air rifles, hunting, tech articles etc.

Great choice going with an air rifle!

As a lad, I had my choice of a first gun on my birthday. Despite drooling for a new Winchester 9422 I took the advice of an older mentor and chose a Benjamin air rifle. Turned out to be a wise choice. Could shoot for hours for a couple bucks and I became deadly with that little gun. Having no quick backup shot tends to encourage careful squirrel shooting. Two years later I got that 9422 and it felt like having a machine gun with 16 shots at a flick of the wrist. But I rarely needed a second shot because the shoot small, miss small instinct was already there.

I have 2, a Talon and a Condor, and they are both great choices. The Condor (besides costing more) has a higher velocity capability, but is the noisier of the two, as it has a longer barrel that does not have the full length shroud like the Talon has. The Talon's shroud quiets it down, but it's shorter barrel does limit the max velocity capability a bit - there comes a point when increasing the pressure adjustment no longer increases velocity with the shorter barrel. The max velocity with the talon is on the order of 800fps, with the Condor on the order of 1250fps with both in .22 caliber.

Another pair of choices to look at in .22 caliber are the Benjamin Discovery (single shot, ~900fps) and the Marauder (repeater, ~1000). I like my Discovery fine, as well as the Talon, but have no experience with the Marauder. The Air force Condor (with its pressure adjustment maxed) is the most powerful of the 4. All have fine accuracy.

In addition to the site listed in swd's post above, another source for reading up on available air guns is the Pyramid Air website - http://www.pyramydair.com/ - Go the Navigation box on the upper left, open it, then go down and click on "Airgun Academy". That will get you to a large collection of articles by Tom Gaylord, aka B.B. Pelletier. It should be noted that Mr. Gaylord did work closely with Air Force in the design of the Talon; as a very satisfied owner I would say he did a great job.

I bought a 25 cal Marauder in the plastic stock. I love it. I put a Weaver 4-14 grandslam on it with a mildot crosshair. It is an air hog, but totally untuned it is death on sparrows to 50 yards and pigeons/starlings to 75. If I had the cash I would buy the tank to go with it as pumping sucks, but gosh I love this rifle.

Shoulder the Talon before you purchase. I suppose in time, one could get used to the feel. To me they feel terrible.

I do not know a thing about air force rifles.

I expect as long as you are looking at rifles like those on the link above you are in good shape. Not sure how old your Granddaughter is but there are wonderful opportunities to compete in the 4-H program- a good mentor and good equipment in the hands of a young lady is the ticket to lots of blue ribbons.

That option will come, as soon as I can find some RF ammo around here,
I am NOT paying Black Market prices for RF ammo.

And I don't have an air rifle in my collection.....;) yet.........

After the initial price of the air rifle, a couple of tins of pellets,
and I can shoot several hundred shots,
for what they want for RF ammo around here,
$40-$50 dollars for 500rds.

If and when you can find it, before the CA hordes buys it all,
and heads back to CA. :(

Would you care to provide more info on the "feel"?
Not sure what you are relating too.

That little dog knot that rests on your shoulder, right behind your collarbone is very uncomfortable, and provides very little contact. Once you place your cheek on the stock, the gun tends to roll away from you.

With all of the pcp repeaters out there these days Air Force needs to come out with one. I had a single shot air arms and loading pellets in a hurry with large fingers didn't work out so well so I got one with a magazine and never looked back. Buddy of mine has a talon and it's now a safe queen due the same reason.

Don,
The prices for 22 ammo here are just about back to the $20 for a brick and availability is increasing. I even saw an ad for 22 LR in a paper the other day. The local range puts on 22 silhouette and for the first time in 3 years we had eight shooters on the line. I hope your prices and supply get better.

The best USA air gun site is the Yellow Forum. Huge number of members and many are very experienced. If you go with a PCP, you need to consider an air source as snert mentioned. No way would I consider using a mechanical pump - think bicycle type. The small Air Hog tank is quite expensive and you would need to have an air supply place available such as a dive shop or, maybe a paint ball shop. Another option is to buy an air pump which I have never used.

If getting an expensive air tank is out of the question or not having an air supply source nearby, I suggest getting an FWB 600S with a side lever cocking device. It is an extremely accurate .177 cal springer that is easy to cock and does not involve a break barrel action. I use one for competing in air gun BR without any modification. If you mount a scope loading a pellet is difficult. If shooting open sights, make sure the FWB 600 comes with all of the factory sights. This is a marvelous piece of German engineering originally meant for 10 meter Olympic competition.
