Ahhh, them good ol' days

I received a carton load of bullets from a friend of mine who recently passed away. There were many interesting bullets. The boxes which interested me in particular were the old Sierra bullets and the price tags on them. I'm assuming these were dated in 1972 according to the stock number. A box of Sierra .30 caliber, 130 grain Spitzer boat tails were originally $8.30 with their sale price of $7.22, and another box of Sierra 6mm 75 grain Hollow Points were $7.55 and sale price of $6.63. The old Sierra bullets are still in the original card board box with edge rivets. There is even a box of old Herter's bullets .243 100 grain semi-pointed. I guess this just goes to prove to everyone how old we are all getting.

ALO: Picked these up from a local gentleman, (older than I, and I'm not young), who is not shooting anymore. The 7 box's on the left are lot#'s 06206, 06136 and 06226. These came with the bill of sale dated 1990.

The two box's on the right are older, they were not called MatchKing at that time, lot #'s 50429.

All made in Santa Fe Springs CA.

I took base to ogive length measurements with my Stoney Point gauge and they all measure .619" to .621". Have not weight sorted (yet, maybe later), just takes too much time with my RCBS 10-10.

Just a few years ago I gave my OLD Lee Loaders to a friend of mine. One was a .270 and the other was a .300 Win Mag. The prices listed on them were $9.95! Believe it or not, with my .270, I had some of my most accurate loads. I had a Browning A Bolt>>the first year they came out with it. That rifle shot (at 100 yards) with 140gr Ballistic Tips, an 11 shot group that measured 15/16th of an inch! Not bad for a hunting rifle! But LOOK a the price of accuracy $9.95! UNreal!! LOL!!!

Speaking of some oldies. I have several boxes of the old Nosler Zipedo bullets, .243 cal - 75gr and 85gr.
I shot some of them not too long ago and they still shoot good. Also have a bunch of the old boxes of Sierras from the 70's. Time goes by fast....

Sure would be nice to turn the clock back a bit when it comes to the price of shooting supplies. Not just bullets were cheaper as you know...When I got out of the service in 74 I bought a Rem 700 22-250 with bull barrel and remember paying 225.00 brand new. At that time you stayed away from variable scopes for accuracy and put a 12 power strait Leupold scope on it. The scope new was 165.00. Same scope today is about 400.00 I think. My 870 Wingmaster new was 165.00. Boy things have changed for sure! ::) :) Thanks a lot ALO for reminding me how old I am... >:( ;D...LOL

I have old sisk boxes that were marked 2.00.I also have a box of savage .227 bullets that had a tag which fell off and said 2.50.The savage box is perfect and unopened.I have a box of .270 bullets form vernon speer probably from when he first started and they are marked cheaper than a 2 liter bottle of soda these days.

I have some Speer nickel plated bullets, Herters wasp waist bullets, Sisk, lots of old Sierra and other brands that were from small shops in the NE.

Just think: 30 or 40 years from now, people will be saying how CHEAP reloading components were back in 2014 (assuming they're still even LEGAL 30 years from now)...

In other words, BUY IT WHILE IT'S STILL CHEAP!

I have a box of Herters "Wasp Waist" bullets... and powder cans that are marked $2.85

I have a box of Norma 30 cal 110gr that have a nickel looking coating, shot a few in a 30-30. probably 45 yrs old.

Just goes to show ya what the banksters have done to the value of that undefined symbol, $. Those bullets are worth approximately the same as they always were in terms of weight of silver or gold.

I paid $300 for a Ruger M77 in 270 Winchester and $329 for a Remington 700 varminter in the late 70's or early 80's and we did stay away from variable scopes back then and only bought straight power Leupold scopes. I have a canister of H322, label says, U.S. GOV'T SURPLUS, suggested retail $7.99 and the sticker shows that I paid $5.89 a pound.

I remember when you could buy all the components to load 1000rds of 223 for $100.00 and you could buy 1000rds of LC ammo for $180.00 shipped. AK's to the door for less than $200.00.
