Aguila 22lr super extra - any good?

I saw the 22 ammo test article but there was no mention of the Aguila 22 ammo (super extra). PLease share your opinions/experience with this brand.

Well, I've done some testing and comparing Aguila ammos to some of the better competition ammos like the Eley's, Lapua's and Federal Ultra Match UM22. As you may know, generally Aguila is made south the border, but I've also seen some of the Super Extra boxes indicate they're made in the US. Tried it and other Aguila's in one of my Savage rifles as well as in my Anschutz 64 MPR during early to mid 2012. I didn't find it particularly impressive at 50 yds and shot sorta like either Wolf's (Match Target - Match Extra ) So IMHO, Aguila isn't gonna win any competitions, but again in today's market, it's better than nothing which is what most store seems to have available...nothing. Finally, as with any rimfire rifle and the propensity for each rifle liking something different, you won't really know until you try it. Just don't expect Aguila to perform as well and be as consistent as the top brands I mentioned. Hope that helps.

My custom 10/22 and one of my mod 37s love it. Not quite as good as Tenex, but I don't shoot in competition. It is the best bcheap ammo that I own.

It's certainly not match grade, but Aguila is plenty good enough for plinking and casual shooting. I've fired quite a bit of it, it functions just fine in semiautos and goes bang every time, with decent accuracy. As to the "dirty" question, I never noticed its being any dirtier than other brands, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

I shoot it in my Savage 900tr, ammo shoots good. About the same as the lower quality Match Wolf ammo (not sure which one as there are two types) in my rifle.

I have a 52B with an Eric Johnson barrel on it and it seems to like it quite well. It is the 40 grain subsonic Aguila .22 SuperExtra in the yellow box with blue trim, Eley primed, round nose lead.

I don't find it dirty in the bolt rifle, can't say to the semi auto guys thought.

It is worth a go with it for plinking; I would put it in the same class as Eley Sport, may be even a little better in some rifles. The tired bore in the 52 is past her prime; so when I find an ammo that will keep a dime sized group at 50 yards, it is worth buying a brick. It is good to see these older CMP/ antique target rifles shoot half well, mine was built in 1950 and sports Redfield Olympic peep sights.

Biggest complaint I would have is the price I paid for it the last time. I bought some for $3.24 a box a few years back before the ammo craze, it was the first time I had tried it. A year or so back I found a brick for $70 dollars at a gun show; a little steep in my book, but compared to what others brands were selling for at the show I rolled over and paid the man. I see Midway has it for $4 a box, but I notice that the picture of the box on their website does not say "Eley Primed" on it. $4 a box is the right money for it.

One other thought. I find that the wax does not play well with some other brands of ammo out of my bore. Clean your bore before you go to evaluating it between other brands of ammo, which should go without saying.

FWIW, have shot the Aguila super extra 40 gr and the Aguila golden eagle match ammo. For me, the super extra shot more accurate in my BSA Model 12 rifle. The Super Extra shot well in my other 22 rifles too.
