Again Updated** last one Panda question

So I received my Panda action today from my FFL. First thing I noticed was that it wasn't smooth at all felt rather rough. Nothing like my Atlas or defiance. the bolt lift was rough too. Like half way up on the lift, the bolt feels like it's hitting a wall, and it takes some force to lift the bolt all the way open.

The extractor had a chip out of it as well. And the raceways looked like this. I've seen this on a Tikka on the bolt lugs but never like this on a brand new action. Gonna send it to kelbly's I think.

And idea what that's about? Does it just need to be broken in to smooth out? Curious about the picture though.

The raceways are broached, not EDM'd, and will have marks from the cutter
Hey Dave. I'm not sure of the difference but I'll take your word. Have you noticed that the panda is not smooth out of the gate and smooths out with time?

Edit: those aren't gouges or scratches or anything like that on the raceways. That is a bad picture, my apologies. I was referring to where the lugs make contact with the raceways. They are almost a perfect outline. You're saying that's normal?

Thanks!

Wipe all the lug surfaces off. Put some grease on them, and oil the bolt. The action being aluminum will feel different than you are used to.
I did that right when I brought it home. (Didn't oil bolt though. I will do that part.) Just that bolt lift is real weird how it takes an unreasonable amount of force.

Also, get some grease where the cocking piece fits into the notch on the bolt body. Sometimes these can use a bit of smoothing out...can make a big difference. Don't forget some grease on the camming angles on the lug abuttments. -Al

Is it a nitride bolt ?

I got a black nitride bolt for my ppc. It was amazing the difference from the original bolt

Suppose I'll send it to kelbly's regardless and have em nitride the bolt. As well as check it out and put a new extractor on it.

Al, I will lube all of the areas mentioned. Just playing with it has started to smooth it out a bit.

I've only ever handled well worn in Pandas so I can't offer a lot... but I've had a couple actions that took some time to wear in, and now they're among my favorite;.

That's good to hear! When I first picked it up today, it felt like the lugs were running on the race ways when working the bolt. That is now gone and it is smoothing up a little. I just don't like the lugs marks on the raceway. I didn't really understand what Dave was saying, if that was normal or not.

They aren't lug marks on the raceway. Hop on youtube and look up broaching and wire EDM. It'll be immediately obvious what both methods are. Work the action 1000 times and you'll be posting again saying "i love this thing"

I got mine brand new as my first custom action, drove up there and picked it up myself with a nitrate bolt.

I will say the force to open the bolt at first surprised me, everything on it now is glass smooth I have about 550 rounds through it. The bolt lift is heavy, but it’s not clunky. Every so often if you run the bolt at a weird angle it will hang up a little bit for me, then I just take a second and we are all good.

It’s a fantastic action and they are a great group of people that will definitely take care of you if anything mentioned is an issue.

Thanks a ton fellas. I have two kelbly atlas actions and I was expecting the same thing out of the box with Panda. I'll keep working the action in. @LVLAaron will do. I looked it up real quick earlier but if I see some videos it'll be more helpful understanding it. I'm usually not THIS slow. Haha
