After Fire Forming 6mm PPC From Russian 220

I am told the easiest way to obtain 6mm PPC is to fireform it from Russian .220 brass. My question is what will I need to do afterwards and how to do it. Just purchased this rifle and now the fun begins. I thinko_O

Before you do anything you need to know your neck diameter. You may very well have to turn case necks for them even to chamber. Try and find a local shooter with PPC experience in your area that will help you. At the very least do a search and read.

The easiest way to make 6ppc brass is to buy Norma 6ppc brass. I'm not a great shooter, but I've got both the fireformed 220 Russian and the Norma and there's no accuracy or case life difference that I've been able to see. A growing number of shooters that I compete with are migrating to the Norma.

And as others have stated, you'll need to know how the chamber is cut so that you can turn your necks to the correct thickness. WD

Or buy a box of Norma.

The most serious BR shooters have developed detailed routines around Lapua 220R, but I can’t see any downside to setting up your baselines with Norma. If there is an advantage to Lapua, it’s not large.

Well Nick, you didn't waste any time moving forward on this project. Congrats. The PPC is fun to shoot.

Fireforming isn't a big deal. If this is a custom job, it most likely has a tight neck. As others have said, no matter what brass you buy you must turn necks if that is the case. I'm assuming the gun is used. Did the previous owner provide details?

I have all the information and history of this rifle. It is in pristine condition and absolutely beautiful condition. I not only purchased the rifle from him but scope, mounts dies and brass. Came home with a bucket full of goodies. Not only that, but he made feel as though I had made a lifelong friend. He filled my head with so much advice that I am having a hard time digesting it. Now I am at a loss. How did you know I had bought the rifle. I only got home a few hours ago and haven't posted it yet.

Just last week you created a thread asking about caliber choices for short range work. Yesterday you show up here asking about fire forming. One plus one equals two.

Did he tell you the neck diameter? That's the place we need to start to get you fixed up with some brass that will work in your gun.

Get yourself the Tony Boyer. That is great read and is filled with plenty of information explaining the ins and outs of the PPC.

Congrats on the rifle. Did you buy it from Shooter’s Corner?

Bought from someone on the forum. Beautiful rifle, scope, dies, 20 pieces of brass and a box load of other goodies. The seating die is cut with the same reamer as the rifle barrel. As soon as I get some bushing for the die I can start loading.

I have recently purchased a 6 ppc tight neck ,.261 the brass I am using is Norma a an empty case chambers fine they average .262, how ever once the case is loaded the neck dia. is .265, I don't want to neck turn if possible, what chamber reamer do you suggest so I won't have to turn necks , how much clearance do I need ? , thanks, may God bless

At least a .268. Every br gunsmith will have a .268nk its the biggest seller

Back to the original question
Since you have brass from the seller.
Is it previously fired brass?
Did he sell you a micrometer in the box of goodies?

Safest thing is to give him a call and ask him for the chamber specs.

If you don’t have a quality micrometer you will need one

Even with a.268" neck, you'll have to turn the necks. I don't know how large the necks have to be in order NOT to turn the necks. I'd guess about .272" or so plus to allow adequate clearance. I shoot a .268" with .0015" total clearance....loaded round is .2665"....no problems what so ever. Good luck. Dan

He is using norma brass that is .265 over a loaded round he says in the original post
